Hmmm, the thing is, I now think this phone is a pile of poo. So I don't really want to pay lots of money for an independent inspection/to fix it - because I think it will just go wrong again. But another part of me would really, really like to prove I'm right and that they are scamming folks.. I'll look into costs, and see whether the price of an independent inspection is worth it.

I will also do as much PR damage to them as I can in the meantime because apart from this issue of the lying about water damage, the customer service support is the worst I have ever experienced. Have started a Twitter handle @dontbuyoneplus where I am collating all the complaints from everyone on Twitter who is hacked off with this company.

(For the price of the repair, I can buy a brand new Moto G4 from somewhere with GOOD customer service support!)

That just sounds like a vendetta.

Don't allow yourself to get too worked up about this.

Do you really think you can affect their customer service (or sales) simply by opening a Twitter account?

I'd never even heard of Hong Kong firm "OnePlus" prior to your thread.

Oooh, another thought - my parents are members of Which? They might be interested!

It's not a vendetta. It's an informal consumer activist group, for all those who have been negatively impacted by the dreadful service this company offers. Strength in numbers.

Plus, I've already stopped at least 2 people from buying them (friends who were considering it), so I'm having a tiny wee impact! Today 2 people, tomorrow hundreds. I don't believe anyone who knew how bad the customer service is would risk buying this - I know I wouldn't have. I was just stupid and naive, and I want to protect other people from making the same mistake. And yes, I do have an overdeveloped sense of justice. :)

They won't be interested unless you show them something which is likely to affect many others. Are you really going to present your conspiracy theory to them?

Don't you think any firm which deliberately placed overly sensitive water sensors in their phones would be swiftly caught out? Users more savvy than yourself would quickly deduce and reveal what was going on.

Don't waste any more time with this...I certainly won't be.

No, I'm going to lead with the terrible customer service part of it - which is something that is very easy to evidence.

(There are 2 issues here: the sensors in the phone but - more significantly - the hours I have had to spend trying to get to this point. Honestly, you wouldn't believe how BAD their CS is. Things I have encountered:

    - Problems scheduling appointments for online chat support sessions, because they couldn't get the timezone right. (This happened twice).
    - Then, the expectation that I would spend literally hours on a chat, doing a factory reset on my own phone
    - Then being told I had to call an American number to get support (when there is a UK one)
    - Then waiting on hold multiple times for 10-25 minutes, before getting through to an operator only to have the call immediately dropped
    - Then speaking to operators who are honestly like the walking dead to speak to - it is really hard to get them to understand the problem or to take any action
    - Then being sent around in circles between the customer service centre and the phone repair centre
    - And this whole thing taking about 7 weeks (so far) with no resolution.

Which? probably do need to publish an article about the consumer dangers inherent in purchasing from abroad. I doubt they'll be naming any individual firm, though.
