Central Government funding to local authorities has been cut, they need to save money some how,
LED lights last longer so less maintenance, also saving electricity, More important local authority services are suffering because of these cuts, street lighting is less important than social care for example.0 -
Considering this is actually a serious post .... I was stood in our work toilet cleaning up a smack heads vomit at 8 this morning ... Yet the only problem you seem to have is that the street lights don't convenience you ... Get a grip man ... So although there is less sky glow, the frequencies of light can't be removed at source. New house doesn't have them outside but i imagine it's only a matter of time before the old ones are replaced.
All street lights are a pain for anyone who wants to see the night sky. And as for the lights in all of the (mostly empty) buildings in the middle of towns and cities..:mad::mad:
I don't know why the councils don't fit street lamps with a very shiny metal cap over the top, to reflect the light down to street level where it is needed. They could probably dim them by 30-50% with no appreciable difference noted by anyone in the street. It's not rocket science!
As for keeping sodium street lamps so that a clothes peg won't get lost...words fail me. Just do what I do, turn on the kitchen light (if your kitchen is at the back of your house) or leave the peg where it is. We'll set up a crowdfunding website to replace your pegs if it's that big a deal! :rotfl:"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -
Apparently LED street lighting is having a detrimental impact on already decimated bat populations too.0

My road had their street lights replaced with LED ones in the summer.
They still switch off at 11pm and go back on at 5am - or never for 8-10 weeks of the year.
If they kept them on all night long, it would cost them less than the old lights being on from dusk to 11pm then 5am to dawn. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If you get one of those thermometer things with the wireless outdoor sensor you could put that in your greenhouse and read the temperature whilst sitting in your armchair!
And if your wife is bringing washing in after dark she'll be leaving it too late as the dew will have made it damp again!Adventure before Dementia!0
