Discretionary investment managers can. It could be that it was seen as one way to take a punt on it as the price did appear to undervalue NR. If that didnt work, then the losses could be offset against gains for tax purposes and assuming a 40% saving in tax may have made it a justifiable risk.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). My fund is discretionary and I'm a non tax payer. I'm sure on September 11 there was sufficient warnings not to buy NRK stock! Is it possible that company owned NRK stock that it could not sell!0

Wow, I hadn't really realised until now that fund managers could make such a decision with a fairly large chunk of cash...

The discretionary fund manager will buy and sell daily within the remit he/she is given. This would also include risk profile. NR is certainly a share that could rally when the white knight emerges.
Usually you would use a discretionary fund manager for larger portfolios where you want a hands on daily dealing approach. Typically, portfolios in excess of £100k would be with them. I am surprised that james321 is a non taxpayer and using a discretionary manager as the values of the portfolio they deal with typically would generate returns that would see income tax and CGT having to be dealt with.
James, your questions should be posed to the manager. After all, that is what you pay him for. You have that 1-2-1 contact available to you so you use it.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I have 2 separate savings accounts with Northern Rock under separate account numbers, 1 x ISA and 1 TESSA/ISA. As these are both separate accounts am I covered for £35,000 for each account or is the £35,000 total savings in any 1 bank. If this is the case should I move 1 of the accounts?

As far as i'm aware, it's £35k per person, per institution. So even if you had 10 accounts with NRK, only the first £35k would be covered.0 -
