I am a NR shareholder and I hate the current situation, but, are we not told time and time again that the value of our investments can go down as well as up, it's a chance we take on a company. Disappointing about the dividend though, after it had been announced we would get it.

Absolutely maypole. I'm not that fussed at the moment, I've kept my shares and it'll be interesting to see what happens, and as for the dividend, it's been postponed, better for the company to use it wisely rather than pay out I think...
  • I'm surprised that the shares haven't been suspended.

The shares should move up in the morning. Still be plenty of movement and time to make money from them (City Index) :D

i agree with previous posters, i.e suprised that shares werent suspended and whilst disappointed that the 500 shares been holding for 10 years have gone from being worth over 6000.00 to close to turning to dust, just one of those things with it being a fun experience.

unless northern rock was bearer of good news it was probable that NR shares would go down at end of week when they became ex dividend, a lot of investors will have been holding onto the shares in expectation of the promised dividend, many of these may now sell thus deflating the share price further.

my personal opinion is that rather than sell off the business cheap NR should salvage its local interests even if this means demutalising, sadly its directors and COE are in all probability in common with all bank/building society boards and COE(s) likely to do whats best for themselves. :(
  • I think NR will announce that it has a buyer tomorrow. NR have mentioned they are postponing the dividend while it talks to a buyer, and if you look on share sites that give a list of "buys & sells" for a partcular stock, you'll see that not only does NR have a load of last minute +£1M purchases, so do HBOS and Alliance & Leicester.

It's as though the city know that banking shares will recover once NR is sorted out and so they're buying into banking stocks in anticipation of a rise across the board.

On the other hand I may be wishfull thinking bacause I have HBOS, A&L and NR shares :) - however there were a lot of +£1M buys on all these stocks at the end of todays trading....

Buy now everyone, and let the Dither family have a nice xmas!! :rotfl:

The market had already priced in the cancelation of the dividend, the price did not drop 14.2p when the BBC leaked the news before the official announcement.

The NRK brand is dead as a Dodo. The only outcome is complete winding down, or a takeover and re-branding to the new owner. I doubt the Labour MP's from the NE will allow 6,000 employees to be thrown on the scrap heap, as Maggie did with the miners.

government and fsa have been putting pressure on NR board to cancel the promised dividend, no person or organisation it appears is allowed to blame or cite the government for decisions it makes.

By whom?? Someone you trust enough to put a fair bit of money at risk for a share tip? Where did they get their information? How did they decide on the value?

Is there any reason to follow this advice, or is it just wishful thinking?

  • A relative of mine invests in shares for pension portfolios and this is her advice, when the share price hits 137, which she said is likely to be around or just before midday, to purchase all that I could… she said there’s likely to be an announcement by lunch time that is likely to change things… So I'll be there waiting for that time and price.

Please don't follow the advice given to me if you can not afford to lose your money!
