Whether other people want to exceed the limit or not is up to them, it isn't a good reason for you being in the wrong lane.

You say you were approaching your turn but don't mention whether you were indicating. If you had been, then instead of flashing and tailgating, he would have been able to pull into the LH lane and go by safely on the inside.

Agreed. If you are going to drive 'out of position' then it is a good idea to try and give other road users a clue as to why you are doing it.

The "wrong lane" does not exist. The OP has only been driving a couple of weeks and is trying to drive correctly. The fault lies with the impatient driver behind the OP's car. Would it have been better for the OP to have cut across another vehicle or two, in order to reach his junction? There was no necessity to indicate until OP approached the the turn. Remember that the OP was driving at the maximum speed for that road: which brings into question the mentality of a driver who tailgates and flashes the OP.

    My pet hates about indicating:
The driver who does not indicate, but turns in front of you.
The driver who indicates at the last moment, as they are at the turn.
The driver who indicates so far from the turn, that no one is sure where that driver intends to turn, or has forgotten that the indicator is actually on.

Would you like see the OP carry out the last action?
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

I cannot find any reference to the OP's distance from the turn they were going to take and to me this is a crucial element so my view is:

IF you were in the overtaking lane (i.e. any lane other than the lefthand lane), more than 500m from your turn (based on 3x minimum stopping distance + 200m), not signalling your intention to turn right and not actually overtaking any vehicles (your previous posts state that there was no traffic in the lefthand lane) then I would say that you were in the wrong lane. Also you were potentially committing an offence under the RTA as you clearly did inconvenience another person.

    Driving without reasonable consideration

The offence of driving without reasonable consideration under section 3 of the RTA 1988 is committed only when other persons are inconvenienced by the manner of the defendant's driving, see section 3ZA(4) RTA 1988.

This offence includes amongst other things:

    unnecessarily remaining in an overtaking lane;

Impressive thread revival - seems middle lane use is one of those things people just can't chill out over.

Personally, I tend not to get too bothered by it unless the offender is also running budget tyres and supermarket fuel and has their fog lights on to imitate DRLs.

Oh, hang on, I don't really get worked up even then... :D

If you are driving at the speed limit then no-one can overtake you legally, so no-one can be inconvenienced, and that offence cannot be committed.

Perhaps careless driving (below the standard of a careful and competent driver) might be made to stick?

    I was thinking that yesterday.
Got to blame the insurance companies for running several tv adverts advocating lane hogging.

Incorrect. Someone illegally overtaking can still be inconvenienced. Their illegal action is separate to yours, eg the offence of "unnecessarily remaining in an overtaking lane" which is irrespective of what anyone else may or may not do. Its like arguing that you committed theft but since it was from a person who was speeding your offence doesn't count.

First, "unnecessarily remaining ..." is not an offence: it is just an example of something which might constitute one.

Second, prosecuting someone for inconveniencing a criminal is unlikely, since it would assuredly fail the "public interest" test. Imagine the headlines "Court encourages bullying motorway speedsters".
