xmas/ birthday presents

Hi ive been viewing threads for some time but this is my first post so i hope its in the right place.
Each Birthday?xmas my nan has given all grandchildren quite large £500 presents in form of cash this has been going on for many years. Unfortunately she has had to sell her house to go into a home. She is funding the home £1000 per week herself. SS have said that they will step in and pay when my nan.s money drops below a certain amount. Now my question can she still give the grandchildren these presents or is this now seen as trying to get rid of her money so that the SS will pay for her home. many thanks Phil

I'm no expert but I imagine it would be seen as deprivation of assets for her to continue doing so.

Seriously as adult children you would still be looking at gifts of this amount of an elderly fixed income relative ?

Tell granny to spend her money on herself, that her doing that is the best pressie you could receive

"granny" says it makes her happy to give the grandchildren her hard earn money and what makes "granny" happy is the best pressie we could ask for :D

But would said grandchildren really be able to live with themselves when granny who has worked hard for that money, ends up in a council run home and given ' pocket money' only for the luxuries in life?

You know, a bar of soap, a bag of sweeties and a magazine a week....

Do you know what the LA care home rate in your area is? In many areas they're not going to agree to pay anywhere near £1000 pw- it's closer to £400 where I am.
They may step in and pay for a far cheaper home which would mean either family agreeing to pay the top up, or Nan having to move.

Perhaps that's something else family need to seriously consider before accepting such sums of money off her.

Whether Granny likes to give that sort of money away or not, what sort of Children and Grandchildren would take it.
