Thanks Robin. They do have cowling on but because of where our property is in relation to the road, unfortunately it doesn't help!

Drastic measure called for then. Chainsaw? :D :rotfl::rotfl:

As the lights are new, you are probably very sensitive to them, but will become accustomed.

Some of the lights in our street were changed from short blue ones to taller, brighter, orange ones and for a few weeks I found that I could still sense the one opposite the house and on a level with the window, even with my eyes closed and was dazzled on opening my eyes.

Now they don't bother me, unless I wake and open my eyes while looking in the light's direction.

We also have an alarm clock which takes its signal from a satellite and so its screen flashes bright blue, in the night, when it's scanning to check the time. This used to wake me, every night, even though no noise is involved, but it no longer affects me.

They can be seen in the dark without flashing i.e. if they're kept on. It's the flashing that's like torture when you're trying to sleep at night and apparently blackout curtains/blinds don't always work although will try a sleep mask...

    .

You mean you don't know. Blackout curtains/blinds are very effective if installed properly. They would be my first port of call rather than wearing a mask because apparently:cool: they can be very annoying.

Standard blackout blinds will almost always allow some light to leak around the edges etc.

Especially for a flashing light and if you're particularly sensitive to it I would look at getting cassette-type blackout blinds with side rails as these will genuinely block pretty much all the light.

Alternatively, you could look at shutters.

Either of these will be expensive - but much cheaper than moving house!

When the kids were small we opted for a blackout blind close to the window (in the recess) AND lined curtains.
Yes, there is some leakage round the edge of the blackout blind as the roller type will often have a gap at the edges but the thicker lined curtains did a good job of blocking that excess light for us.

Thanks Ant. Yes, the actual curtains are on a pole at a distance from the window so close to the window would help. I may begin by getting the lining for the curtains and see if that will do the trick. The curtains are quite light coloured so may be darker and thicker would do the trick :)
