Tesco - Petrol Stations - Cost of Air

Seems as though Tesco are introducing a 50p min charge for air at their petrol stations from the previous 20p - a 150% increase for a commodity that is actually free!

As I check 3 vehicles each week that equates to an additional £47 per annum

After contacting their CEO it seems as though a trial at 26 sites has indicated that customers believe that 2 minutes of air for 20p is insufficient to top up 4 tyres, so the new charge of 50p is for 5 minutes..

So I have informed them that I will obtain these services from a retailer who has a more realistic approach to ensuring car safety, along with all my families fuel purchases, which amount to over £6,000 per annum - they may not notice the drop in takings, but I will...

Just use the stuff that's floating around then
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

The charge is made by the companies that own the machines usually,
it pays for the machines to be maintained and serviced and they do get abused and broken on a regular basis, tescos may get a small commision payment for this but cannot be sure of that.
  • Or buy a small electric compressor from a pound shop at less than a tenner. Then charge all your friends and family 20p a time and before you know you will back in the black.

I use a ring min compressor that I keep in car all time. Comes with a light and warning light and will inflate tyres automatically to desired psi. I just used it today and check my tyres regularly to right psi

Air is free, but to buy, maintain and run a compressor is expensive.

If it bothers you that much why not buy one of these for less than a fiver : http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1479331.htm

Or you could really push the boat out and trade-up to a twin-barrelled version for a tenner : http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1454734.htm

Does the job and gives your leg a bit of a work-out as a bonus

If you're going to do it manually, a bike track pump is a MUCH better solution.

I'm buying a foot pump this week. I had to add 7psi to a tyre this week using one of these, which was about 70 plunges....hard work. Leg muscles are much stronger than arm muscles.
