Have photo of any timber you've used Creocote on?

I did my new build fencing with 2 coats of preservative and 2 coats of decking oil,it soaked it up and looks great compared to other fences around.Didn't fancy using paint as it seems to peel after a while. It was a tedious process but worth it to me.....mortgage free 3/10/12:)0

Creocote, creosote, Ducksback, and so on all have two aspects in common. They are either cheap, or are intended as a preservative and not a finish.
I have coated fences, gates, panels with Sadolin Classic. An expensive solution, but I have thinned it down with spirit. Here it pays to seek a dark pigment first. The result is in demanding areas of high exposure to south facing sun, and driving rain, none of the timber has required a re-coat since being done 20-30 years ago. Basically stain once and forget for the life of the timber.
I have just done a good hardwood exterior bench seat . This had been neglected but I suspect the finish will last 5 years or more.0 -
Well after all that it seems the place I work does "Creoseals 100% coat tar creosote".
Is this the proper stuff?
£44 for a 20/25ltr tub whatever size they are. Minus my discount maybe £35 thereabouts.0 -

Very hard to get hold of creosote nowadays. Usually only available to us farmers.....;) Use sensible precautions, but you'd do that anyway with the Creocote.0 -
One of the drums came in damaged so I got myself a sample to try out. See if the boss likes it.
If it looks good then I'll pick up a drum.
Has its perks working for someone who doesn't care who you're supposed to sell it to. If you're giving money then they will give you the goods lol0 -
The ducksback on my shed never peeled it just weathered back to bare wood.
Shame you just missed wilko sale they had stuff cheap.
I prefer brush to spray unless you don't need to worry about where the stuff goes.0 -
Bit late now anyway but what price were Wilko selling it at?
Where i work sells it at £12something for 5ltr. I don't know if that is good or not. I'd doubt it as where i work is known for being on the dear side although some things are surprisingly cheap. Hammerite paint i found to be very cheap from my work & that was before discount. It easily beat all sellers in town, but then other stuff they're way way overpriced.0 -
Worth a look at your local if passing they may have some left.
(Wilco garden sale is seriously good each year they clear the stuff cheap for Halloween and Xmas stock)
Ducksback 5ltr was £7, there own stuff was even cheaper
£10 is around the normal price for 5ltr you see 9ltr at £16.(homebase)
B&Q have 5ltr for £8 today...

Must've been an offer for yesterday then as back at £14 today. I saw our local Wilko having an offer on the Ducksback but the colour we were thinking of wasn't in there.
Back on the topic of proper Creosote .... can anyone calm my wife down? lol. Either that or back up her fears.
Yesterday she was all for creosoting the fence panels. Liked the colour of the shed posted in this thread etc.
I came home today & she was telling me she wasn't happy with Creosote being used. She'd been reading up about it & reports online of people being 'unable to go in to their gardens' for 3 weeks due to their neighbours creosoted fences - due to the strong smell.
Then she goes on about how you can end up getting reported to some environmental folk & how it's poisonous
yada yada yada.
I just painted a test piece of wood. They're not joking when they say 100% coal tar!! That stuff was quite gloopy & i shook it up well. Smelled beautiful thoughQuite black. I left a test piece outside & put another test piece in the shed to see how they both weather. Not that fence panels will be stored in the shed but i was curious.
The way i see it is - it's my fence panels. Nobody is going to end up dead. There may be a smell for a little while but that'll eventually go. It was fine for years & years so what's the problem really?0 -
Tell her to paint the stuff and give her £50 for the job.
seems to have lot of time on her hands for research that could be put to better use.0
