new to credit and confused!

Hi, Looking for a little bit of advice!

My partner and I are in our mid twenties and just starting out looking at homes to buy and gathering info on mortgages etc. Our savings are still quite a way from the deposit we're hoping to save but we're just starting to gather info at the moment.
Before I go on I'll say that I have never had any credit cards, loans, finance, etc. other than the usual mobile phone, gym contracts and so on. I did have a student overdraft which fluctuated over the limit a few times while I was at uni but it was always paid back into the limit within days and the whole overdraft has been cleared now for about 6 months and I'm in a secure full time decent paid job.

Today we went into our bank nationwide to have a chat about giving ourselves the best chance at being accepted for a mortgage, I asked if I got a credit card it would help to build up my credit score and was told it would however when I applied I was declined. The bank weren't able to say why but advised me to go away and check my credit score with experian so have signed up with them but while I'm awaiting my acceptance from them I thought I'd have a look on noddle who gave me a score of 3/5 and just 10 points lower than the average in my area. I have however also noticed that there are no electoral roll details on my noddle file, I registered all of my details with the council in august after recently moving home but have just read on an experian web page that between august and November local councils update their records and don't pass this on to credit rating agencies until December - is this correct??

Is it worth me applying for a credit card for those with low and no credit or should I hang fire until I have the electoral roll details sorted?

I'm all new to this and feeling frustrated that the fact I haven't needed credit cards, loans and so on could affect our chances of getting a mortgage. Any help and advice would be hugely appreciated!!
Helen
