Screwfix service

I'm not going to have a rant here because they may have some system which i'm not aware of since i'm not a regular customer there.

What is the policy if you want to buy something there? You don't have to 'book in' do you? Surely not?

I went in & there was a guy (customer) at the desk & another at the till. There was a chap in front of me & then 4-5 others around the shop.

The young girl serving the guy at the till finally dealt with him. There was another young girl on the computer. I thought she was getting information for a customer but it turned out she was only looking at some Screwfix Phone or whatever it was.

The customer at the desk got served. People kept coming from the back & talking to other staff on the front.

The girl who was looking at the phone then went over to the other girl at the till & started talking about that.

The chap in front of me hadn't been approached in all this time. I saw he had papers in his hand which looked like receipts.

About 10 minutes passed & the guy in front of me hadn't been seen in all that time (maybe he had before, i don't know).
Not once was i approached for "are you ok sir" or "can i help you".

The place i work has a similar layout & if there's people queuing up then you don't stand behind the counter waiting for a customer to approach you, you ask "who's next" or you approach them if it's someone who's just come in or whatever.

Here & there people would come from the back shouting out order numbers & customers would pick up their items.

10 minutes was long enough to wait without being approached so i just left the shop.

Which makes me wonder - is Screwfix only a place where you have to click+collect or whatever & book a time slot to pick up your item? It sure felt like i couldn't just go in & buy something there & then.

You started by saying you weren't going to have a rant!

I use screwfix a lot at many different branches and my experience has been that they can't help enough, sometimes to the point of me thinking, just leave me alone.

Most of the time I am greeted by someone at or near the door

You go in and place your order at a till when its your turn . Are given a number and then wait around for your order .
Some outlets still have a few trade only counters .Like Argos they have catalogues and order forms around the store .

    And i didn't.

I explained what happened so that you would be informed and then i questioned what the setup was in a Screwfix store since i think i've only ever been in once before many moons ago & that wasn't even for me.

If you think that was a rant then you're mistaken.

Oh & i knew exactly what i wanted as i'd looked it up online beforehand. Even got the reference code noted down.

Just never got called up/approached & was just left waiting.

I've had & seen similar experiences in other shops when young girls are left to 'man-the-front' without an 'older' adult there if you will - especially if there's more than 1 of them. They're more interested in yapping to each other about nothing in particular than getting on with their jobs.

There, that bit was a mini rant ;)

It goes without saying that isn't the standard of service Screwfix expect its staff to deliver , did you ask for a manager ?

Speak to someone behind the counter and tell them what you want. I often write my order on a scrap of paper before going there.
Did you try speaking to any of the staff? Excuse me normally works. There are normally customers hovering in there while they are waiting for their orders to be filled. If you didn't speak up I expect it was assumed you had placed your order and were waiting for it.
  • Sounds like they screwed up.....
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • The stores seem to vary greatly in how they treat customers. I've been in some where they have a 'greeter' as you come in, who checks you're being served, even to the extent of calling other staff to the tills if needed. I've been in others where they flat out ignore you. Sounds like you got the latter type, unfortunately.

Note to self. Screwfix is not a dating service. Lesson learnt.
