I don't understand why anyone would work for free, which is what he is doing. I don't come in early, and I don't stay late, unless there is a really good reason, ususlly agreed prior to happening, and if my boss were to threaten me with unemployment for doing my job within working hours, then I would opursue the matter through an employment tribunal.

However, if he is having to go in to complete work that he SHOULD be able to do within his normal working week, it is either a matter of poor time management on his part or that he is being given too much work to do by his manager. Either way, there are ways to resolve the problem, either through more training for him or reducing his work load.

It does seem odd to me that someone who 'isn't a doer' (as you said yourself) is suddenly so devoted to his job - are you sure there are no issues which he is avoiding by spending so much time at work?
I don't think you are unreasonable to expect your husband to work when he is supposed to and not when he isn't, but it might be that this is a symptom of something else rather than a cut and dried case of workaholism!

That's retail I'm afraid. My hubby worked 9 weeks straight - yes 9 weeks without 1 day off from 7am to 7pm and no he wasn't raking in the money he was salaried. The only day he got off was one Sunday because it was our daughter's christening - I kid ye not.

Needless to say he got out - completely different industry earning the same anount of money and doing half the hours.

Sorry but this isn't the way it works in retail - you can't blame the hubby to a point, the chances are he hasn't a choice.

OP, my OH was the same, he worked for a supermarket as a manager and they expected him to work extra hours for no extra money, i wasn't happy as i was pregnant at the time, it seemed to get worse once the baby came, and i hardly saw him at all.
he now works for a bank, more money better hours and he isn't even a manager there!!
just noticed you're from bury, me too!! small world
