Handy for what exactly? I certainly wouldn't bother buying a "cheaper enclosure", but maybe that's just me...

I guess this is why Sky have now gone down the rental route for Sky Q decoders. Customers will have to return their Sky Q on cancellation ....

Backing up files, storing multi-media content, lots of uses. BTW an enclosure is only 10 to 15 quid.

If you remove your Sky card, before it expires, & keep it out for 3 full months, put it back in then, once it wakes up! you will actually find that recording & playback are still enabled - Of course you will only be able to watch, record & play the free stuff (previously encrypted recordings will not play), it will in fact behave like a freesat recorder - but only if you have the patience to wait those 3 months!
This is a little known quirk in their software - I've found about 5 cards so far that behave like this, all where people took the box out of service + card, & used their new Virgin or BT box instead.......

This is only true of (some) very old Sky+ models which are generally no longer available. Sky fixed this "loophole" years ago.

So a DRX890W is a very old model is it? This is the wireless version for BB BTW, & it records & plays with it's white card any free to view material..... Picked it up from a Car boot a couple of days ago

It is the card that enables the function - just keep it out of the box following cancellation of a Sky subscription BEFORE the "turn off" signal is sent, & keep it out for 3 months - works every time....If Sky could stop it, they would have done this LONG ago.
It is a REAL "money saving tip"
