Help ! Windows update not working ..??
Comments

No idea what the 20+ random posts are about ??.
shrimply ... apart from the update issue , the machine seems excellent .. everything loads very quickly . Touchpad seems fine .. but i do use a mouse most of the time .
Appears to be 460+ previously installed updates ... can't see the rogue one people mention .. and nothing relevant to windoews 10 .
I guess if i uninstall every one of the 460 previous .. and then do an update .. potentially i'll still end up with a problem ?0 -
OP, the random posts are I think just huffing and puffing and foot.stamping by certain techies - it's their way of being friendly to users who don't behave completely subserviently
I picked up in post #5 that you expressed the desire to stick with W7.
So I suggested a quick look at Never10 to make sure your machine was not secretly downloading files for W10.
The regulars decided to poo-poo that suggestion as redundant because Microsoft have stated that the automatic upgrade ("offer") from W7 to W10 is over.
I personally do not believe that means they have given up on upgrading W7 users. After all, we unfortunate W10 Home Edition users got stuck with W10 Anniversary Update recently without even being able to choose when it hit!
<rest of post pruned as it looks like the OP's problem isn't so much W7 or W10 related, as it is Microsoft 2016 over-enthusiastic-snooping-during-updates related.>0 -

If you have some recent restore points, you could try putting the system back to before the problem started. It might just sort itself out then. Failing that, maybe a clean install of Windows 7, having backed your data up first, but you'll have to reinstall and reconfigure all your software.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Victor2 Restore points don't apply ... this problem was from the minute i turned the machine on, the day it arrived from misco.com .
As soon as i logged in to the wifi i went to do updates .
Regarding clean installs etc .... way beyond my knowledge and ability !! ....
and after now transferring previous laptop stuff and setting up everything new .. dread the thought of having to do it all again .0 -
Did anyone notice there were some optional updates along with this months important updates (Uzbekistan not having daylight saving time) that were purported to remove all the "naughty" updates, KB3035583 amongst them or did I just dream it. I hid them.
Yes indeed I did notice that in my W7 updates this week. The fact that Microsoft has removed all the W10 nag software with that update would seem to indicate that they are genuinely not going to try to sneak in W10 any more.... If you return it or get the supplier's tech support on it, they will almost certainly do a factory restore - and lose all the setup you've done. So, if accepting that is the way to go, you might as well do that yourself. There will be a "recovery" option available, which should be detailed in the documentation.
Not pleasant to have to set it all up again, but it must have worked to some extent for you to set it up initially, did you just ignore the updating problem while you did that?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Thank you, I know it seems daft being concerned about the touchpad but I like mine to be really sensitive and I've tried a couple of higher end machines lately where even with the sensitivity turned right up it seems to be an effort to move the pointer around.
I hope you mange to get your problems sorted. I'm sure you will, there are some very wise people here.
You could try manually installing this
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172605
But I suspect that other than that a few times shutting down the machine and starting it up will probably help. I've had windows updates do some odd things in the past but they do tend to resolve themselves.0
