Data recovery services? Broken seagate 1tb hard drive - where to get it fixed?

which HDDs have the least failure rate or at least recovery rate when they do fail. Sadly I don't think Seagate came up tops as I assumed.
No - don't assume any reliability and get complacent. Assume your drive, and all data on it, will be lost tomorrow. That'll keep you backing up!
You can't really get 'cheap' hard disk drives - there aren't that many manufacturers. The cheapness will come from the enclosures they put them in etc. One person will tell you they had a nightmare when their Maxtor died, the other will tell you never to buy Western Digital because they had one fail. Listen to enough of these people, and you'll run out of brands to avoid!
'Desktop' (bigger, need to be plugged in to power) drives are obviously cheaper per GB, but less portable. No point paying more for a 'portable' (USB powered) if you're never going to carry it.
A selection from a quick look around...

No point in buying external drives for backup, you're wasing money on an enclosure. If you really don't feel up to the job of plugging a drive into your PC internally, I use one of these for convenience - works on PC and laptop drives. I also have a set of these for keeping the drives safe while stored.
For better robustnes against losing stuff, I have a backup on a different drive within my system which is backed up daily, and another which I periodically do onto a drive which I connect just for that purpose. It helps to protect against corruption as well as drive failure.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

Bonkers. You're saying don't buy an external drive, buy an internal one, and and backup to that?
1. External drives cost around the same as internal - you're really not paying too much for that enclosure.
2. Some people might be backing up laptops
3. If the power supply on your PC fails, it could take BOTH drives with it.
4. If the second drive is just for backup, you're wasting energy, and putting more strain on the power supply mentioned above
5. If you have an external you can use it across multiple computers.0 -

2. With the drive mount I linked to, this isn't an issue.
3. Don't leave it plugged in, as I described

However, looking at external drive prices, point 1. is reasonable for most average users, youre right.
I have spare internal drives I wasn't using for anything else, so the mount I bought makes most sense. It has lots of other benefits, too; like the ability to access data off a drive from an otherwise defunct PC or laptop. You mean an external one ?
Nope, I mean an internal one connected in the drive mount I linked to.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
I'm getting quite lost and confused on this thread - I am working on a lap top, wouldn't be able to open it myself to put another internal hardrive?? That said i have now reached my laptop c drive storage limit (think it is 250gb) not sure if I am better off paying for a new laptop with over 1tb storage (are these models available??) or buying more internal storage (which I don't think is a great idea asa laptop is now 6 years old, runs quite slowly)0

Keep it simple ... get an external drive with its own enclosure.
I have a dual version of what Naf posted, but I got it when I had spare internal drives after moving from a desktop to a laptop. If I hadn't then I would have got external drives instead.
As regards Kroll Ontrack ... they are the #1 in the business, but they tend only to be used by businesses. (I've used them before when the HDD in my work's Dell laptop crashed. Cost [my company] a lot of money but they recovered everything).0 -
Thanks Doam. Yes I contacted Kroll but they did not respond for several days on this occasion which did nothing to calm my nerves and so I went with Cheadle - again the best decision for me. Cheadle were also super fast with communication. I am sure a large business would also benefit from Cheadle's service. He was also I believe a little less costly than Kroll. But always good to have a few recommendations
RE::an external hard drive with own enclosure - do you mean a HDD by this? If not what do you mean please? And please post links if you are kindly able to. Thanks.0 -
