Yes - sure. John is really transparent with cost break downs.. Came to £379 +Vat and I also had to pay an extra bit of cash because it had been opened before by Disklabs,. Try not to let a PC shop or another company open your disk before.

And anyone reading this thread can also benefit from hindsight. You could easily have 4x 2TB hard drives for the price of the recovery. BACK UP YOUR DATA! Hey, back it up twice!
No problem with using HDD, it's still far cheaper per GB than SSD, and an SSD is a real waste for backup IMO at the moment. Thanks for keeping the thread up to date.

Yes, moral is BACK UP DATA! So true. Where can you get cheap 2TB Hdd drives from? Please share any links /deals here in this thread if you can// or spot any good buys.

i bought my new one from John Lewis (1tb) for around £50-60 I think. And I urge everyone to read Which? about which HDDs have the least failure rate or at least recovery rate when they do fail. Sadly I don't think Seagate came up tops as I assumed.

and have not had any problems yet.


If you are to use an external HDD as your primary backup then it may be best to stear away from "cheap" as one of your requirements for purchase..


I know this is a money saving site - But buying a reliable device can save you ££ in the long run (as you have discovered)

Western Digital 1Tb are around £45 on Amazon at the moment, 2Tb getting on for £70.

I've bought pretty much all of my drives from Amazon, a mix of Samsung and WD

I'll look into WD ansd Samsung too - they seem to be the best with Toshiba also.
