Took mine about 3hr and it has removed the old form of IE which I had pinned to task bar, the complete programme has been removed from my files, tried to download again and it says it is not compatable with windows 10.
I do it just for fun and whatever I win is a bonus

It sounds that there may be something wrong with how your machine is shutting down??
I'm not sure what it was but what I can say is that at the start of the update, my PC did restart itself without issue several times before it just sat there with the little wheel going around.

I seem to be OK now- had another tag on my start tab the day after this happened asking me to update and shut down/restart so as a glutton for punishment I tried (the other option was to shut down without any update) but it seemed to work fine, took another 15 minutes or so but so far no issues.

Just to pre-warn anyone to only do this if you do not need your PC that day/evening or at least for the next few hours. I've no idea what went on but shutting down or restarting never was a problem and doesn't seem to be one now either. If it was that which was the problem when trying to update I've no idea how it w as fixed!

EXCEPT I've seen a couple of desktop computers end up with the Start Menu going full screen which has caused a bit of panic.

Took 50mins on an 8 year old Dell Vostro. (that's with an SSD).

I assume that everybody is referring to the "Feature update to windows 10, version 1607."

So which version of IE were you using? The anniversary edition downloads an updated version of IE11. If you were using something earlier than IE11 this might account for that disappearing but not why IE11 isn't there.

  • Mine took about 20 mins, but now it is taking ages for any webpage to open.

Check CPU and disk usage in Task manager. As your new OS upgrade only took 20 mins I'm guessing you have SSD(s). Reportedly fixed (SSD issues), but it may be worth ensuring that there aren't any outstanding Windows Updates (if you can run it).

  • Thanks to grumpycrab, I did try windows updates, and system clean up, and deleting some games, but in case this slowness happens to anyone else, what seems to have fixed it is increasing the size of the virtual memory.

That's interesting. How much RAM do you have and (if you can remember) how much virtual memory was (automatically) allocated?

  • 4GB RAM. Virtual memory was about 1350, I think, and I upped it to 1500.
