OK so to update my nightmare that was the Windows 10 update. After waiting in total 4 hours of a black screen I manually turned off my PC (I'd decided nothing was going to change, in total the 5 hours I'd waited I was either going to end up with a shell or a PC with a blank screen and a wheel.

I was then able to update further and then got onto my home screen ! It took another half an hour but at least I was able to see the % rate go up rather than a black screen.

I then was asked a few hours later to turn off my PC and update because there were things that were not complete. I had the morning off to deal with any messing around (had decided to attempt to go back to an older version should the updates not work) and yet again, the next morning after I'd given the computer around 6 hours to update itself, I was greeted again with a black screen with a wheel....

    I manually restarted again.

This time it seemed to work, the computer finished the updates and everything seemed to be fine, the notifications tab said all the updates were fine. What I didn't realise was that Windows had updated just about everything (eg the monitor, the printer, the mouse...had all been updated) the keyboard however now no longer works. I have no idea why but I'm so bored with Microsoft and it's crazily long and intrusive and unworkable updates I can't be bothered so am using my emergency keyboard and will attempt to update the keyboard (it's wireless) at a later date.

Hope this will be of use to someone. It did update but I had to manually turn off the PC when it became stuck twice.
  • It sounds that there may be something wrong with how your machine is shutting down??

  • Mine took hours, but when it had finished, I realised that when I had plugged in my laptop I hadn't actually
flicked the socket switch so it had been running on minimal battery power throughout.

I've got three Windows 10 PC's, and on each of them it took about four hours including download, preparing to install, install, and the bit after the install.

Once it's complete, you might want to check the privacy settings. The update switches a lot of them back in favour of Microsoft.

It changes the Start button layout, which is good way to check if a PC has had it installed or not.
