Talk talk threaten to charge when contract ends!

With 31 days to go before my 18/12 contract with TT ends, phoned them up on their 'cancelling hotline' to ensure that I would be not charged anything beyond the final payment for the final month of the contract.
Phone help was useless as no one would answer my questions and then they kept transferring me til they cut me off.
Tried the LIVE CHAT option and no one would there would just confirm acceptance of my pledge to pay the final bill, due end of this month and stated as payment due to the final period to contract end and to give them 30 days notice so they could just end any service at midnight on the last day of the 18/12 contract.
After an hour I was finally given a statement that at end of contract disconnection would be made without charge.
Now someone in BARONESS HARDING's office is threatening that being out of contract does not mean they cannot bill me!!!
How can that be legal?
Have endured them for 5 years and the constant losses of data leading to endless scammers and strangers phoning me to tell me they know I am with TALK TALK etc [whilst TALK TALK deny any of my data was given away/stolen/sold] means I cannot risk staying with them.
But now am being LOCKED into remaining with them with unknown charges ahead.
Why have a hotline for 30 NOTICE CANCELLING when that is not accepted?
Anyone found a way out of this 'robbery with menaces?' I'm very distressed over it!
Thanks
S

Is there a reason you are cancelling your phone line/BB and not just moving to a new provider?
It sounds like it's a cease charge. Usually about £30 I think. It's a standard charge levied by Openreach that a lot of ISPs pass on to the customer.
No need to get very distressed over it! How have they locked you in? Have they extended your minimum term without your consent?0 -
Hi Stephanie,
There would be no cancellation charges if you chose to disconnect your services at the end of your contracted period.
The end of your contract does not mean that we will cancel your services. You would still be liable for any service charges after your contract end date if you still have an active service at that time.
Thanks

You are 'in contract' until the service is terminated or moved to another provider.
What you refer to as 18/12 is the 'minimum term' you agreed in exchange for a special price.
If the service is discontinued or transferred, after this time, you will be billed for any service used , at full price, for time between the end of minimum term and the leaving date.
Also, as providers bill in advance for anything except non-inclusive calls, you will probably be billed and charged for a whole month, but then have a refund.0 -
Thanks for replies.
Have arranged to go to a new provider but TALK TALK now threaten to charge me for EARLY TERMINATION!
As one has to contact another provider in advance so not to be without phone/online services, is it inevitable that one would have to contact the new provider before the current 18/12 contract ends.
But as TALK TALK bill...due to be paid end of Sept, states Direct Debit amount will cover the full charges for line/broadband to end of the 18/12 contract, then TALK TALK will have been paid IN FULL for any services they provide.
The new provider is taking over 10 days before the TALK TALK contract ends, so TALK TALK will be being paid end of Sept for 10 days when they WILL NOT PROVIDE ANYTHING TO ME!
So how can they be allowed to charge for 'early termination'?
I made all attempts to give them 30 days notice but they would not allow that to be accepted [phone staff cut me off, online staff 'live' support refused to acknowledge my notice statements] so I did all I could to advise them I no longer required their services once the 18/12 contract ended.
That contract stated a specific date of start/end so how can they ask for MORE money when the full payment for all that 18//12 period is being paid.
There will be NO phonecall charges due as there are no inclusive calls in the package so have not used the phone since noting that.
After years of paying them and with their boss The Baroness Harding publicly shown at their shareholders meeting to be on over 2.2 million pounds a year....is THIS how she gets that vast income? By chasing up those who pay for their services for years but then have to leave due to the ongoing risks when TALK TALK allow customer data to be stolen/sold/given away so many times in a less than a year?
The brazen grasping of this company seemingly knows no bounds!0 -

The fact that you have made no phone calls doesn't affect forward billing , but provided you leave after the minimum term is satisfied you will be refunded anything overcharged beyond the 30 days' notice.
Also, you don't have to contact the new provider in advance to prevent being without service. Changeover takes about half an hour and you won't be cut off at the end of your minimum term; just charged full price on a daily basis.0
