Most bathroom refurbs if full tiled will cost between 4 and 6k if done by a pro.

With really basic material you can get down to 3.5k or even less.

You would be lucky in most areas of the country to get something decent done for less than that.

Tiles from Victorian plumbing £8 per square meter almost the cheapest they had! Mosaic tiles from eBay. Tiles it myself, people were wanting to charge £20-40psm, and actually it wasn't as hard as I imagined, I'm really pleased with it since I'm a single mum who's never tiles before. Bathroom fitter charged £350 but he cracked a couple of tiles so maybe he wasn't the best!!
I think you'll find the odd one always cracks which is why you buy up to 10% spare!

    £8 psqm is REALLY cheap.
  • I recently did mine as cheaply as I could and probably got under that figure.
Bathroom suite from eBay £430, stand alone shower and radiator also from there (but all new). Tiles from Victorian plumbing £8 per square meter almost the cheapest they had! Wow, that's amazing! I asked a handy man if you could do something tiling and he said it was best left to the professionals. Probably right but the above show what you can do if you have some patience. I am not looking for anything fancy really and reckon and could get the tiles and suite for £2k or so.

Do you guys think it's worth getting a designer? Also, we are look to combine the bath and the shower. Currently they are separate. Are there any cons you can think of about doing this? Also, would it be a massive issue that we may be moving the bath to a new position?
I can't think what a "bathroom designer" does other than lay out lots of expensive stuff to suit his taste not yours.
I would have a separate shower if there's room but it needs to be a big enclosure. If you have to go for a shower over the bath make sure you get a bath with a big flat bottom to stand in. I've been on holiday in places with a 2 foot square shower cubicle & with a shower over a bath with no flat area to stand in. Neither very practical.
Moving the bath depends on the plumbing, you need to be able to run water to it but more awkward is getting the waste away.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

As a "bathroom designer" and a "she", I know a little bit more than how to lay out expensive stuff to my taste. I'd be quite happy to put my work against yours :)

Different people can afford different things and sometimes quality has to be compromised for the budget, which is fair enough, but people who know about bathrooms know a lot about bathrooms.

    For comparison:

We are in the north of england, and our bathroom is about 2.25m square.

We are paying £3800 for labour and tiling, which includes: full bathroom demo (it's covered in wood panelling including behind the shower, was there when we moved in :D), inevitable replastering or skimming depending on how bad it is, we're taking out the standalone shower cubicle and electric shower, moving taps, moving sink, shifting toilet down the wall a bit, putting in underfloor electric heating because I'm a princess, new shower rail, extractor fan. Half tile on two walls and full tile of shower and bath.

They're providing piping, grout etc and I'm getting the sanitary ware and the stuff you see. I have spent £300 on wall tiles...because I'm a princess and I love tiles. Will prob spend another £150 on floor tiles because apparently I like tiles that are £45/sq m (but hey! it's not much sq m is it!). I also need to get thermostatic shower, bath, panel, screen, sink, vanity and taps. We have toilet and radiator.

Am hoping to get it in at £5k. But that will depend how lucky I get with the vanity and sink.

Our bathroom needs a complete redo. Basically I invite people round so they can laugh at it at the moment. But if yours needs less work, you're less of a princess about tiles and underfloor heating, and you do some jobs yourself then I think £2.5k might be do-able...maybe more like £3k to be realistic?
