Recommend a smart phone for an 89-year old?

Hi everyone, my nan has been eyeing up our smart phones. She currently has a 'dumb' phone, albeit one with a touch screen, and now wants a smart phone, mostly to replace Ceefax so she can look at the news and sports headlines!
I've found her a good sim-only deal on Three, and we were going to use my sister's old work phone but we haven't been able to unlock it from O2 (long story), so we're going to buy her a second hand phone instead.
I've only ever had an iPhone (second hand when my friend upgraded
) so don't have much experience of other models - can anyone recommend a reliable but easy to use smartphone for my nan?
One other thing to consider is she's quite hard of hearing. She won't use it for calls often but it needs to be clear and loud when she does.
Thanks all

Hi
I'd suggest you take her down to a shop and have her try a basic entry level set. I'd go for an HTC one, a Samsung and I guess others might suggest another.
I have her try one's that are new release phones without all the bells and whistles. For example, Samsung's A 2016.
Another way of doing it is to arrange some visitors for her, all with different phones. My dad was fine with phones, he just needed a careful intro.0 -
Thanks tinas that's very helpful, I can see a day trip coming up this weekend!
Luckily she's quite keen to get one - with other changes (e.g. current accounts, gas suppliers) she's point-blank refused any kind of change even when it's straightforward and to her advantage.0 -
Moto G is worth a look .0

Also have a look at installing a simplifed launcher.
Some examples here

Are you sure a phone is the best thing for her? At 89, she might find a small screen a bit difficult to read - have you looked at tablets?0

£131 from Appliance direct0 -
Tesco out of stock on line probably because of their '£25 off' promotion, but most of their stores have them @ £149
I bought one yesterday
Appliances Direct charge £15 for delivery to some UK destinations
