£20 Phone Line Transfer Charge - Moving from TalkTalk to Sky

Hi all,

I'm taking up that good deal on the site for the Sky Fibre Broadband, thankfully my TalkTalk contract is coming to an end so its perfect timing.

As going through the process and putting in all my details, it says I have to pay a £20 phone line transfer charge as apparently my current phone line is not compatible with Sky. I know this is rubbish as I've had sky here before!!

Was wondering if anyone had a similar experience and what the outcome was? As their help is currently offline.

Many thanks
Andy

You can not have Sky broadband on a Talk talk line. You either need to take talktalk bb or transfer your 0hone line to Sky.

If you've had Sky before then it was not while your phone line was with Talktalk
  • Really? That's news to me!

It says on SamKnows that I have access to all the normal lines, such as TalkTalk, BT and Sky. And says on the Sky website that if I'm with TalkTalk, that its no problem and only takes a few minutes to switch over on the day of switch. This is the first time I've heard about having to pay for a transfer!

Sky's standard terms say 'Compatible line required, otherwise connection charge from £20 ...'

Have you had Sky Broadband on the line before or a Sky box connected to the line?

Sky seem desperate to get new customers have you asked them to waive the £20?

...but there is a small amount of physical work to do at your exchange, involving a BT Openreach person changing some connections over from TalkTalk equipment to Skys. Some pass this charge on,some don't -as per previous post ,worth trying to "persuade" Sky to absorb the cost:)
For instance, Plusnet have hardened their attitude recently -they treat a move from them to either Sky or TalkTalk as a "cease" and charge ~ £30 !!

Yeah I've definitely had sky before! Went through old emails and I had it just over a year ago, I ended up leaving them as they upped their prices so I was eligible to leave before end of contract. I wonder if this is their way of getting revenge! :p
  • There is so little profit in broadband and fiber these days (just look at the prices!) that companies need to re-coup as much as they can. The 'router delivery fees' are a perfect example. The £20 is a reasonable charge - TalkTalk charge £50. As such I would personally just pay it. If you wish to fight for - go for it, but i don't know how successful you will be.
  • I'm in the same boat. Was with Sky for phone and broadband 12 months ago and moved to TT. While the service with TT hasn't been the best, the cost was great as I paid for a year's line rental in advance, got free broadband for a year, and then a free upgrade to their anytime calls package after the hacking scandal!

Anyway, the 12 months is nearly up so looking for the next good deal and am liking this Sky one. I started a dummy application and was also told it would be £20 to switch. The cost doesn't put me off, but I was a bit perplexed as it's a BT line (not cable) so not sure why this would be viewed as a reconnection, rather than just a provider switch. But I'm no expert...

I do have a couple of queries. I see the Sky deal is for new customers. We ceased as phone customers a year ago as I mentioned, but we still have TV (in my name only). I assume I'll therefore have to apply in my wife's name to count as a new customer in their eyes (she kept her maiden name so little to otherwise link us apart from living in the same house).

Also, my TT contract expires on 12 October. I've forgotten how long switches take. Should I delay the application until 29 September to reduce risk of the switch happening until the 12 months are up?
  • hello

as with the other poster here I am unsure of the best time to make the switch to avoid TALK TALK trying to get extra payment from me.

My bill says I will have paid up by Sept end on the final portion of the 18 month contract with TT and I presumed that my notice to TALK TALK, made days ago, about not wishing to renew any further contracts with TT would let me just escape with this final monthly payment.

Then as SKY state they take 2 weeks to implement the switchover then I would time the request to SKY 2 weeks before my TT contract ends.

BUT can TT then state that I am breaking the contract even if 2 weeks to go and I will be paying them the full payment for the final month of the contract?

They are threatening me with further bills after I leave.

Anyone been through this and know how to avoid double payments during a switch over.

    All help gratefully accepted.

    Thanks

Guess my code is now useless so will need to find another offer. Did MSE know the terms would be changed when they posted the offer and members responded to it?

OH NO! That's not good! How is this possible?! Why would they give out a certain amount of codes and not acknowledge all of them?!
