Powerline Network Adaptors

Just wondering if anyone has experience of using anything like this

If I'm not mistaken they didn't have a great reputation in the past, and still don't seem particularly cheap (even at sale price!).

Homeplugs are very useful if it is not possible or practical to lay an ethernet cable from the router to where you want to connect, or when WiFi doesn't work well in that room. In those instances Homeplugs are useful, especially one which is a wireless access point.

They work fairly well and have come down somewhat in price over the years - unless you buy Devolo.

You don't buy Homeplugs just for the fun of it - you buy them when they are the best way of solving your connectivity problem(s).

I have the Trendnet 407e2k (passthrough) homeplugs and tbh they're OK when they work but as I mentioned in another post they tend to drop the connection at least once or twice a day.

We purchased 2 of these: TP-LINK TL-PA7020PKIT AV1000 2 Port Gigabit Pass Through Powerline Adapter Starter Kit from Amazon following months of problems with wifi. We've not had a problem since, no lines dropping etc and are really pleased with them, so much so that we've just purchased another one to use with our TV for streaming.

In my experience homeplug is better than wifi but less reliable than a proper cabled network.

I would recommend the passthrough adapters as sooner or later you will want to plug something else in.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Just don,t forget they should not be used with Surge/Spike Protectors so I'm told, I use the TP-Link devices no problems.

The modern ones are much better than the older ones as they are OS independent and faster too.

Just two words of warning: If you've had an extension done to the house or two separate boxes then these will not work. They cannot "share" two circuit boxes.

Secondly these come with wifi and non wifi versions. If you're looking to extend range then maybe look at a wifi repeater instead.

The two models I use are the DEVOLO dLAN 1200+ Starter Kit and the TP-Link AV500

    Please ignore this.

Why do you keep posting this urban myth which is absolute rubbish!

TP- Link recommendations 300Mbps AV500 Wi-Fi Powerline Extender
    TL-WPA4220

    I agree with jshm2
    Plug and Play
    1. Plug one Internet connected adapter into a nearby power outlet. 2. Connect additional adapters to PCs/laptops/Internet TVs or other networked devices via an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi - and you're done! *Recommended: Press the pair buttons for network security and data encryption. Note: Powerline adapters should be deployed on the same circuit and in set of two or more.

  • It may be a mis-unsterstanding on words.
The circuts may be different, but they're all connected as the electric comes through the meter.

I have this exact problem - I will need to set up one in an extension that has a different fuse board to the rest of the house.

I'll test, see what happens and report back.
  • The price for those is pretty reasonable, if i hadn't already bought a pair they would be on my shortlist.
