Can a SLIDING HASP BOLT be added to a upvc door?

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone know if I can add a SLIDING HASP BOLT like this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-MM-4-PADLOCKED-HEAVY-DUTY-SLIDING-HASP-BOLT-FOR-DOOR-GATE-DEAD-BOLT-LOCK-/261880662201?var=&hash=item3cf94dc8b9:m:muaDJQRT2c9LWDr7OOLUxVA

to a upvc door? and if not is there anything else similar I could add, just for the extra bit security? thanks in advance.

Does the door already have a multi-point locking system? If so just fit an anti-snap anti-bump lock. Advocet are good locks. Its a quick and easy job to switch over the barrel.

You need to check that the infill panels are reinforced, the door panel itself being the weakest part and easily springs if not reinforced. Most are now but only in recent years. Believe it or not they just use thin MDF but evidently it adds enough stiffness.

Panel has to be removed by slippimg out the internal beads, replacement panels with rf are available.

  • Thanks for the replies. DO you know who I would ask for changing the locks on my front door? how do I know who would be a reputable locksmith? Would they keys be totally brand new and no one would have a copy other than myself?

If it is the barrel, just do it yourself, look for a youtube video, but its only a screw or two, then pull the old barrel out, slip the new one in, done.

Locksmiths have a body/code of conduct that they have to adhere to. Go with a local locksmith, he doesn't want linking to crime in his area,

Just the reason I am asking is because I am moving to a new rental property and didnt really want to change the locks, but just wanted extra security meaning that if any of the previous tenants kept a key or made a copy of the key then they still wouldnt be able to come in.

So thats why I was thinking of maybe this

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261880662201?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=560722211055&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Obviously could not lock it if Im out the house though.

So wondering if theres anything I could add to the door so that way if a previous tenant had kept a key they could not enter?

Assuming the door has euro cylinders, which nearly all UPVC doors have, why not just change the lock cylinder(s)? That eliminates the possibility of somebody else having a key. Landlord might not be too happy, but if you keep the old cylinders, you can put them back when you leave.
Depending on the level of security you want, cylinders can be less than £10, with maybe £40+ for a more secure one.
They take minutes to change, all you need is a screwdriver. Plenty of videos around on how to do it.

  • Thanks so much! How about the key, would a new key come with a new lock cylinder?

Of course (generally at least two), that's why you're replacing it. :)
