Also check in the router that no other devices are using up your pool of IP addresses.

    Hi

The range 169.254.0.0 -169.254.255.255 is for a device that has joined another network somewhere and is still looking for it, Hotel or Office etc and has not used DHCP to get a new 192 etc address, or it is faulty.
It can be a self assigned number when all else fails as mentioned above.
(The lower ranges of 169 are for South Africa, and probably not relevant.)

So a purge of the device settings regarding Wi-Fi and set up for DHCP as previously mentioned.

Sorry that this is nothing new, just re-inforceing the advice given by othes.

I'd double-check the router settings. Is there any way the phone could be trying to get an IP address that has already been assigned? Do you have MAC filtering enabled?

How would I know the phone is trying to get an already assigned IP address? There are 100 available on the router settings, and only ever 5 (when it works) devices connected. Would MAC filtering make a difference....it is off, and always has been, even when all the devices connected properly.

And check the settings on the phone too -- is it set with a static local IP address instead of using DHCP? Has the local gateway been manually set?

The phone is set to DHCP and always has been.

PS As of this morning, my iPhone 6S is now failing to connect and is also showing a 169 number in the list of connected devices in the router home page. I suspect it is a router fault after all.

Purging both the router and the iphone 6 has made no difference. As an update...as of this morning my iPhone 6S is also not connecting and being assigned a 169 number by the router, so I do agree that it appears the router is faulty.
  • As an aside how can the router see the phone as 169..... , computer says no way jose?

The router connection page showing the allocated IP number shows both iphones (my iPhone 6S) as of this morning showing 169 numbers. As I look at the router home page showing the connected devices, I see my laptop and Apple TV with 192 addresses, and as I say, the 2 iphones with 169 addresses... so, computer says YES !:rotfl:

    Done that, it does`nt.
  • Are you putting in the correct password for your wifi after forgetting it (i.e. is the phone asking for the password?)

    Yes, correct passwords.
  • The state of play with this problem today is that my laptop and chromebook connect ok and display 192 IP addresses in the list of "connected devices" in the router home page.

Both Iphones now fail to join (although each phone shows the router network in the available networks) but show 169 addresses in the list of "connected devices" in the router home page.

Both iphones and the router have been reset, purged of old settings etc and switched back on, with no difference.

Thinking that the problem may be confined to Apple, I switched on my Apple TV and it connects to the router ok and shows a 192 address in the list of "connected devices" in the router home page.

Moving on..... I had a thought that the issue may be down to iPhones and this problem started following the IOS 10 update, however, whilst I have updated my iPhone 6S, my wife has not updated her iPhone 6.

Also I have rechecked the router settings and see that the security is set to WPA/WPA2 PSK and the 802.11 setting, set to AUTO (the only other alternatives are 802.11 b and 802.11b/g).

    Stumped big time !!

Here's a suggestion. Switch everything off completely. Switch on router and when that is fully booted switch on each device in turn and attempt to connect, starting with your Iphones.
