Child tax credit child over 16 delay?

My son in over 16 and is continuing in non advanced education (doing his 2nd year of Btec level 3).

Last year I notified child ben and they updated both their benefit and the tax credits and my payments were sorted and paid as normal from September.

This year my renewals for both had son removed again so I notified child ben on 20/07 about the extension and specifically requested they notify tax credits. I got a revised child ben award notice quite quickly and in fact have had the first sept payment at the correct amount.

However having not heard from tax credits by mid august on 20/08 I contacted them and confirmed my sons details.

First Sept tax credit payment went in last thurs but at a reduced amount.

Logged in to the online portal and he no longer shows on my account, BUT there is a message stating if a child is over 16 the case will be being reviewed this week.

Just wondering if anyone else is in the same position and is there any point me calling them up or is it a case of wait and see, could do without a reduced payment this week as well, but will manage as best we can-know we will have to manage from next year onwards anyway. At what point do I say they have lost my notification or messed it up and need to chase up?

Just looking for some reassurance tbh.

  • Happens every year. They can only update the system from 1st September.

You are generally advised to wait two weeks for any awards notice.

Same here, notified them ages ago that child was staying in education, then last week no payment. On phone same message, will be sorted this week.
  • I'm not sure that you were correct in asking CB to inform CTC - I think it's your responsibility to inform both.

Having said that, previous posters are correct that the system updates on 1st September.

CB do inform CTC, they told me so and I rang CTC a couple of weeks ago to be told they had the details from CB and that my credits would not stop though there might be a slight adjustment, then lo and behold last week it stopped.

The online form I used to notify child benefit actually had a specific question at the end "Do you wish us to inform tax credits of this change of circumstances" tick for yes, which I did :)

However having had a job for the DWP a few years ago I know sometimes stuff should be notified from one dept to another but sometimes goes astray. The worst used to be the computer printouts listing various notifications from other benefit systems and government departments and compliance scans. They often would be pages and pages full of items to check, many of which weren't that important and they were certainly put to the bottom of the pile when it came to work allocation as it was other items such as new benefit claims that were monitored and had high profile targets.

I did hope tho as it was a specific question it might have been more organised lol. Will see what money lands tommorrow.

Well I got 2 payments today, one that looked like my normal payment a £1 and something up then a smaller payment which when I calculated left abt £76 short from last week, rang them and was told that it would be included in future weekly payments yet it's not! The amount actually is slightly down, advisor agreed it looked like I was missing a payment, got passed on to some other department where I was told to check my award, yet he had it front of him, then told it made no sense, then told the award of what I had remaining was correct but he could not account for the missing payment! Talked to his manager who said the award was correct, yet again he said it made no sense but was correct and I must get off the phone! Could understand it if I was rude but I was not! Asked to speak to his manger got told shes gone to lunch then he said she's gone to the toilet! I am dumbfounded, not sure what to do next.

You don't usually get the missing payment paid as a lump sum. They calculate what you are due between 1st Sept and 5th Apr then divide that between the number of weeks left.
