The first time my BIL cooked for my sister he gave her food poisoning with undercooked chicken. They were students, it was a day before her first year exams started.

Not a romantic meal but, a while ago I had to have an operation. It was a day job, but I was left very woozy. My chap at the time thought he'd do the cooking when I got home. Veggie burgers. Hmn. Anyway, I told him where the baps, burgers and accompaniments were. I then said to use the spray oil, on the side. He used Neutradol. Because it was a spray 'on the side'.
I made tea that night, despite my pain and bandages! He's now my ex.

Haha reminded me of the time my BF 'polished' the entire house top to bottom - with RAID instead of PLEDGE. Apparently he didn't notice (or smell) the difference :o

Mind you, we didn't have any flies for a while :p

I don't think I've ever exploded anything (except a jacket potato but that was more spontaneous combustion) but I'm not a good cook. I don't think I'd dare to cook a romantic meal for someone for fear of what it would turn out like :o
  • Sorry for laughing, Flinchy, but this is funny. You should have posted this over on Old Style. The ladies would have had a good giggle at this.

Dear Flinchy, you were very brave using a pressure cooker, those things terrify me !

Perhaps you should invest in a slow cooker ? They make lovely casserole type meals.

    Thanks for sharing . Xx

Not a romantic meal, just food for me. But before I went to uni I'd never cooked, ever. I could do almost anything around the house - even put shelves up. But I couldn't cook.

I tried to cook frozen sweetcorn but had no idea what to do with it. I'd seen my mum cook small frozen sausage rolls for parties and things, and I knew she'd put them on a baking tray and separated them out. So that's what I did. Every single kernel.

I also tried to 'cook' cornflake cakes. They looked fab in their new little paper cake cases. I didn't have a multi-cake tin to put them in the oven, so I simply put them on a baking tray (mistake one) and then put them in the oven (mistake two). Turns out that chocolate cornflake cakes melt in the oven, they definitely do not 'cook'.

As my mum said to me: "for someone who's so bright, you're incredibly stupid sometimes".

    Yup.
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

He was a total hero though, he just ate it all even though he absolutely hated every single mouthful because he liked me and knew i had worked hard to make the dinner a lovely surprise.
    .

Reminds me of a girlfriend doing a Christmas dinner once with all the trimmings. She did sprouts ........ I hate sprouts. And i had to try and hide them in the middle of the potatoes, and then gulp so i couldn't taste them.

  • Two disasters I have had have all been from trying to cook recipes that need a lot of chopping of ingredients (I was young, had the bizarre idea that if the guest was special some pain and time in preparation HAD to happen).

Some time ago.., so was using Delia's original cookery book, supposedly meant for non accomplished chefs. It didn't include useful little instructions like 'if you are preparing this after a hard day at work and want to eat before midnight, prepare the night before', however.

By the time I'd chopped the stuffing for the stuffed rolled lamb, it was late. By the time it finished cooking (took hours, I don't know why) we were past starvation, waiting for it had become an ordeal. I didn't see him again lol.

Next disaster was meatballs with noodles. I had learned my lesson, I did prepare beforehand. But the noodle packet said 'steep in boiled water'. So we had a very long wait, again. But I was cheered up when the gentleman concerned said he wanted to do a completely white meal, and I didn't see him again. There was going to be a lot of cauliflower in that meal I suspect.., and rice. No thanks.
