To be fair, at anything over 270mm, you're unlikely to get your money back in savings before you die.0

A fair comment, and everyone to their own view. The loft insulation will be cheap as chips, particularly if current promotions are sought - they come around as the darker nights draw in. So the work will be done once with an opportunity to future proof for negligible extra cost.
I am guessing you are not an eco warrior if you seek only the bare minimum. Certainly I am not, but I have around 500mm on one roof and it has made a huge difference to the comfort levels - it was only around 250mm before.0 -
I am in your camp when it comes to insulation levels (my last place had 400mm), but it's always worth mentioning that you're into diminishing returns once you are over 270.
As you say, it's best to wait until the promotions come out. Not sure if they're government subsidised (they always stipulate that they're not for new constructions), but the savings are massive.0 -
Get as much as you can in, so another 170mm.
You'll want to allow a bit of space for cross ventilation.
The aforementioned LoftZone kits are designed to allow for the full 270mm plus ventilation but as someone mentioned check your loft height.
I had planned to use the kits in ours but as it was quite low and the joists centres were very inconsistent I did end up just running cross battens using 3x2. We only have 100mm of insulation though - the design of our roof (skeilings) made topping up to 270mm awkward.0 -

whats the deal with getting insulation when there are government subsidies? I got a rolle of £25 which covers 13 square meters. It is actually very cheap. I just need 3 rolls of it to fully cover the loft.0

Oh OK
We already has a basic 150mm layer in the loft. inbetween the rafters. Someone did come to assess and they deemend that we did not quality for any more. I got myself a roll for £25 and layed a top up layer just so I futurte proof myself (dont want to break up the loft floor because it needs a top up layer of insulation.0 -
Keep an eye on gumtree in your area, often fairly cheap leftover bags of rolls etc for loft insulation and often solid insulation tooChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0
