Thanks for the replies folks, I've just rung them and was told that no notice was required for withdrawals of £5000 or less and to take passport , drivers license and the account card. Lets hope the call centre lady is well informed!

It isn't a question of permission. You have the wrong word. It's notification and the reasons for that have been explained.

Why on Earth do people need to take out thousands of pounds in cash? (one poster saying "numerous times up to £10,000")

There's any number of safe and secure ways of making payments ... I don't get it

The vendor may want cash only for fear of a chargeback or something.

What I think is strange is how the poster above you thinks making large cash withdrawals is somehow odd, and 'doesn't get it' Doesn't take much brain power or imagination - Cash is generally the most secure form of payment.

Banks are also known to block large bank transfers - in fact Santander did this t me recently to my Club Lloyds 4% account. Easily resolved with a phone call but if that payment had been to someone else, they would have been thinking I hadn't paid them.

I pay however my vendor wants to pay, if they ask for cash, they get cash.
  • What annoys me is it costs about £30 for a chaps payment which almost always goes through successfully so it feels like the banks are just finding another way to charge you.

If by 'one poster' you mean me - I did say £1000!

You withdraw cash to make cash transactions, betting shops won't accept cheques :)

If you are involved in having to make CHAPS payments, you have something wrong with your money management - WADR :)

Well the vendor and solicitor insist on them when making house purchases how else would you buy property?

I'm afraid I was thinking of everything but house purchase, which isn't an everyday occurrence. Buying a house is a huge expense with huge expenses attaching to it. I would guess the CHAPS charge is one of the smaller items.
