The problem with built in SatNavs is they can usually only be updated by the dealers who charge a ridicules amount, it is cheaper to buy a separate TomTom or Garmin with free lifetime updates.

    Really?

Any Mercs or BMWs i've had have all been DVD based so its just a matter of "acquiring" the latest version.

Any card / HDD based ones should have a non dealer based update option.

My car has a built in Garmin Nuvi Sat Nav - the car was serviced last week for a fixed price by the main dealers but the Sat Nav was not updated ...(it is "requesting" an update !!)
Would you expect a dashboard Sat Nav to be included in the service items or not ?

If you tell us the make / model / year of the car we might be able to help advise on the cheapest way to update it?

    Also is the Garmin detachable?

That used to be the case right enough - but the latest BMW sat-navs can be USB updated -i.e. you download the new maps onto your own 32GB memory stick then use the USB slot on the car.

If you have internet on the i-drive the sat-nav can be downloaded directly to the car - even as you drive.

And it's dead cheap these days - free for 5 years and then around £25 for the latest update after that.

Handy enough. It used to be scandalous for update discs

Tell me about it - :( and it wasn't just BMW - LandRover were just as bad with their discs - I even had to get a set of 3 or perhaps it was 4 of them for the whole of Europe.

Thank God that technology has moved on - and even more importantly that prices have dropped.

Yes I have done - you have to plug in a USB key and download a file which you then upload in to Garmins website - this then gives you the update file with the cost !!
I have emailed Garmin to ask for the cost before I download the file - no response yet !!

    Register and log in here:

    https://suzuki.garmin.com/suzuki/

You can get the map updates and firmware updates too and buy traffic subscription.

You have to pay for the map updates, although they were half price earlier in the year. I think that promotion might be still on up till the 31st Oct 2016.

You will have to use IE though as the website is fussy about browsers :(
