This is horrible - The people of Hull should riot ..
Or at least make a MASSIVE fuss ..
Sounds like Kcom have a monopoly here - shouldnt they be made to offer their lines out for resale the same as BT ?
It isn't a monopoly as they do offer their services ... from wikipedia...
According to a decision from the European Commission in 2004, KCOM Group held a 100% market share in the wholesale market of broadband services in the Hull area.....
In May 2008 the "Review of the wholesale broadband access markets"[15] report published by Ofcom determined that KC was not acting in a way that would keep out rival companies, and that pricing for wholesale broadband and access to local-loop unbundling was within the market range. The main reason cited by rivals for not providing services in the Hull area was rather one of overall cost effectiveness, given the relatively small number of potential customers (190,000 homes), and the fact that many of these would be likely to remain with the incumbent supplier.[16]“Time is intended to be spent, not saved” - Alfred Wainwright0 -
Sky broadband have a 25GB limit for their basic dealsDo you really expect your Aunty to know the ins and outs of whether she should install an update0

If i were in your shoes, i would first check what the signal was like for the Three network in your house.
Then i would buy an old samsung galaxy s2 from ebay (Around 50 squid)
Then, get a PAYG sim card from Three, stick it in and load it with the £25 a month package that gives you 300 mins, 3000 texts and Unlimited data.
Set up a hotspot and your off.
(I say a galaxy s2 but any unlocked phone from that era will work, this is because this was before the networks started to implement teathering restrictions in the handsets)
I use this method myself for streaming stuff on my laptop whilst on a train or whatever
You should get at least 4Mb/s , which is plenty for one device streaming
This method won't work with the Three network because since they have started tightening the restrictions on tethering they don't allow it on PAYG.
This is also not dependant on the device because they use packet sniffing to determine the destination of the data. So any data not destined to go to the phone will be intercepted and cut off!.0 -

My current set up begs to differ, and works in exactly the way that i have described.
They would like you to think they sniff packets - but rather it is part of the software on the handset
My current set up, that works perfectly, can testify to that.0 -

That is very interesting and something that I will be trying if it actually works.
When they brought in the restrictions to tethering I looked online for various workarounds and couldn't find one, but I haven't tried an older device!.
But have you actually tried this on the Three network and confirmed it has worked?. A few years ago it went from suddenly working even thought I exceeded my limit to not working and counting how much data I had used. This was without any software updates on my device.0 -

!! YES , Lol or i wouldnt be posting it now would i !!
As i said, this is the set up that i currently use, and have used for around 4 years now ..
It is the only reason i keep hold of my trusty old SG2 PAYG set up, and carry a work iphone aswell
(Work grumble if you hammer the 4g)
I stream roughly 2 hours a day on the train on the commute to work, little'un teathers her tablet to it and hammers youtube and netflix while we are in the car going anywhere
Cheeky bit of iplayer whilst waiting for someone in a meeting ..
etc etc etc0 -

That's good then! I only asked because you mentioned using Vodafone earlier.0 -
Ahh yes, Vodafone is the works iphone.
I only teather that when i have to do work VPN stuff - But even saying that, they dont seem to differentiate between teathered and none teathered traffic on the vodafone bill ??!!
It just says "data usage"0 -

That is indeed strange . Maybe i have just been lucky - but i can assure you that it works here .. They recently ramped up the price though, it was only £15 a month late last year, then suddenly jumped to £20 and then £25 in the space of a month or so ..
In January, when i first moved into my new house and was waiting for broadband to be fitted , unfortunately there were no neighbours close enough for me to hack their wifi so the SG2 teathered to my main computer (attached to tv in front room) was my only source of TV for around 3 weeks.
Bearing in mind the TV is on in our house from the moment i get home to the moment i go to bed.
Thats quite a lot of data, and i think if they were going to notice atall, then they would have done then !0
