Take the trinkets out of the bedroom. Job done. You never had one when you were young.0

Just set up firewall rules on your router that block network access from the relevant devices. Then manually enable/disable them as needed.
Yes I think this is the way to go but the Sky router does not have that functionality so either an additional or replacement device is required. Thanks for the pointer0 -

Yeah a couple of other folks came up with that idea but like I mentioned then as well, the devices in question are three 32" Panasonic TV's and 3 Amazon Fire TV boxes networked back to a swtich and the internet. And you are right I certainly never had those back in the day.
I think folks are jumping on the 'iphone under the bed sheets' scenario. It isn't that it's the switch off of TV and TV sources at time 'x'
The small device discussion is one I can manage fairly well although in fairness ideas to improve that are always welcome. I guess people will need to make the assumption that basic 'child management' is in place operating fairly well. :-) ...only fairly well mind.
I'm pretty sure we did have equivalent trinkets back then just in a different form....mine was in the form of a Decca Legatto cassette player and a Fidelity Transistor radio :-)0 -
How old are the occupants of said bedrooms?0

Hi there, 8, 11 and 13. Basically we have standardised the same components for each room and flood wired all the rooms. Form a management point of view it gives us good options.
So we might as well be realistic about the need/access argument but need to implement management tools as well as good parent management.
As has been mentioned a few times in the thread, it looks like configuring the router by device v time/date looks like the way forward e.g TV i.p address is allowed on between 3.30pm and 8.00pm on mon-fri and wider access weekends...same for Freesat / Fire TV boxes.
PC devices already have that set up and tablets/iphones we will also restrict via the router as they operate wirelessly and do not have 3/4g. Cheers0 -

Are you sure? That functionality should be in every router.
I don't know if it's the same for you, but in the web interface of my Sky router, I go to Security, Firewall Rules, and add them there. You can subsequently enable/disable them by ticking/unticking a box.0 -

Have to confess to not having personally looked yet (it's actually our daughters place we are refurbing) but Sky support themselves replied to a question saying they did not have this.
Their suggestion was to keep the Sky Hub and then add a router acting as a switch to the front end of it.
For sure I will look at that but as well as device it would need to have a time window option. But if is has then home and dry.
Thanks for the advice0 -

I suspect they didn't know what they were talking about, or were trying to say that there's no facility to enable firewall rules by time-of-day.jumeriah64 wrote: »Their suggestion was to keep the Sky Hub and then add a router acting as a switch to the front end of it.

I suppose you could get a network switch, attach your kids' devices to the switch, and use an old-fashioned timer on the plug that powers the switch.0 -

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable, letting children that young, browse the internet in private.0 -
When my sons were children they didn't have tvs in their rooms and if they were in their childhood, now, they still wouldn't have them.
I'd ask nicely once, then give one warning and then act if ignored twice. The devices would be gone. After all they are absolute luxuries; not necessities and the more they are given , the less they appreciate.
If they don't want to go to bed to sleep, they can read a book.0
