If the new phone is locked a I doubt O2 would (or even could unless it's locked to their network) unlock it under a different mobile contract for free. Usually phones from this dealer are unlocked - check with them before you buy if in doubt.

Unless I have misunderstood the Op said they were getting a new O2 phone and contract? Even if bought through a reseller (Mobiles/Cpw) couldn't O2 process the SIM unlock as part of their contract? My error if not.

As you say, reseller phones aren't always locked (and caution may also be required tinkering with anything if it may affect the deal).

If the phone being locked to o2 is an issue the OP could always PAC across to giffgaff then back to o2.

Will be a minimum £10 initial top up i think.

Thank you so much for your replies. I have checked and won't be able to use the my old sim card anyway, because it's micro and I need nano.
When I get my new phone on Monday, is it correct that I will get a temporary number and if so do you know how long I will be able to use it.
As I mentioned previously, I am going abroad for 4 days and want to use my new phone. I would start the process of porting my number after I am back.

    Many thanks again :)

SIMS are only locked by the customer, not the network. Follishly, the majority of customers fail to lock their sims - and when they do they can unlock them at any time should they so wish. It's the phone we are talking about. O2 to O2 wouldn't be a problem, but O2 wouldn';t unlock the new phone but it would be worth getting a free unlock on the old one regardless of what they do with it.

As regards the "temporary" new number OP - it's only temporary if you change it by exercising the PAC from the old contract (which, remeber, won't end only you do within the 30 days). Otherwise the new number will be permanent unless you fail to use it within 3-6 months.

You can use one of these to convert your old sim.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nano-Sim-Card-Cutter-for-iPhone-5-5S-iPad-Mini-Free-Adapters-Micro-Sim-UK-/131774384231?hash=item1eae5d8867:g:S~UAAOSwp5JWZsk4

Maybe a good backup plan to order one.

As for your new phone. Have you ordered just a phone (may come with PAYG sim that would require topping up to make calls) or contract ? Either will continue to work for a long time until you kick off a porting process.

Hi, Thank you again for your replies, much appreciated.
I have got my new phone and monthly contract sim card.
I set it all up. Just wanted to check, if this is the sim card which will be set up to use at the moment for the contract I got?
I am also going to order the Pay as you go asda sim card, ready to get my old phone transfered.

    Many thanks

    Tatiana
  • Use the new sim card until you exercise the PAC first to the PAYG, then another one to your new phone. The number will then change at that point but the sim card won't - i.e. it'll be your new one with your old number.
