If your car works then why do you even bother with an oil change?

I was advised by the place i go to usually to have it serviced, regassed, whatever you wish to call it, every 2 years. I'm fairly certain that was the timeframe given.

You need to pay vehicle excise duty every year, but you didn't bother with that.

The thing is with my wifes car - the air conditioning actually works. We've owned it 12 months. I've no idea when it was last regassed. I know you're supposed to have them serviced every 2 years or something like but we've no idea when this system was last looked at at all.
Where did you get that figure from? I've had a few cars with aircon and none of them has had a requirement to service it at all. The longest I owned one was 9 years. The aircon was never turned off, and it was working as well when I sold it as it was when I bought it. I wonder, who has an interest in telling people they should have their aircon regassed every couple of years?
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
  • My own personal opinion as if it's working leave it, having its regassed every two years seems a bit of an overkill to me.

Also the leakage rate would depend on the quality of the components, good quality components ie Japanese and Korean probably don't leak at the same rate as European ones, a bit of an over generalisation but probably not too far from the truth

And keep using it, all least once a month for 10mins, and in the winter use it as a dimister.
  • For my own car i had the condenser (i think that was the part) replaced as that was the problem. Cost £210 direct from Vauxhall if i remember right (after buying from another seller online resulted in it emptying its contents after a week so i went direct to manufacturer after that).

Had it all gassed up & everything was icy cold, beautiful.

Then after 4 years i noticed things weren't quite what they were. So went back & was told about the 2 year thing. Gassed up again & everything icy cold again ............ even though it was working when i went back a second time.

That sounds to me like a slow leak. Seals etc will fail over time, but I am not sure that regassing will prevent that. The best way to prevent the seals degrading is to use the aircon as much as possible. Are you an 'occasional user'?

Back on track, i've used KF a few times for a re-gas, cheap as most places, up to date equipment and no hassle at all. Go for it, but if it leaks you will need to go elsewhere but then gain they wont charge.

I generally don't use between say November-March during the colder months. I don't find that the air con does anything. Also when you test for pressure the Kpa is way way down compared to the summer months so i wondered if it was even worth it & maybe this is why it feels like it's doing nothing.

Outside of those months i use it regular.

I went to Kwik-Fit with a puncture last thing on a Saturday a couple of years ago; the chap there was great and stayed and did mine - I gave him a fiver tip.

I've got a car whose aircon isn't working; I might get it done...

have a look on groupon a few deals on there from £19 upwards
  • I use mine all year round, as mentioned above the; seals will dry up and degrade if not lubricated by the system. Dunno about kwik fit, I had mine done at a local independant garage I use, they use an automated system which check for leaks and refills afterwards, think it has a database for how much gas to put in as well, as overfilling them or attempting to isn't advised. I'd imagine kwiki fit will be using a similar system.
