Kwik Fit for air conditioning recharge?

I know Kwik Fit get a bad rep. Maybe not to people who aren't really interested in cars but certainly across car forums i've noticed that viewpoint seems pretty common.

I'd go to them if i needed a tyre fitting in an emergency but not for anything overly technical.

I'm just wondering if any of you have been to them for an air con recharge & have positive or negative things to say?

The place i go to usually specialises in air conditioning & they went through the whole thing in depth with me, what does what & why it's done & where other people are likely to cut corners & such. I'd just forgotten to book in with them for this week so it's too late for that now. Plus they're about 30 miles away.

Do Kwik Fit do a proper job?

    Some are good, some bad.

They should do a full check of the system before re gassing.

    I bet not all do..
  • Hmm, this isn't sounding good.

I may sit it out until i'm next off in November & book in with the usual garage 30 mile away, just in time for the winter months :) lol

My previous car needed a re-gas, used Kwik Fit as they had an offer and had no issue what so ever.

TBH, it's pretty much an automated system so there's not much they can do wrong.

It doesnt really matter if they check before hand or not. They wont charge you if its no cooler and they can / you can see & hear where the leak is.

I took a car of mine there, they tried a regas, and then could hear a leak from a split metal pipe near the front of the car. They didnt charge me, i bought the pipe for £8 out of a main dealer, fitted it myself and took the car back for a regas

Now not all work out as handy as that and if yours gets warm again after a month then you've no comeback, BUT its worth remembering they are there for regassing, NOT for full diagnostic checks as to why your aircon isnt doing its job.

Is it worth the cost for the 3 days/year it's a bit hot?

I've got another system in my car, it's called: windows that open. :)
  • They did mine, it was fine. If you can wait they have it on special offer a bit later in the year. I think I paid £ 25. Well worth it.

They connect it to a machine and some struggle with that simple task. Do they know exactly which port it should be connected to?

They vacuum test a system that works under pressure not in a vacuum.

Think of it as sucking a baloon before inflating it to see if it leaks. It should be pressurised with an inert gas before filling to test for leaks not a vacuum test.

What about the other 362 days when there's moisture in the air that you may wish to remove?

I bet you're one of the people I see driving around in winter with all the windows of the car steaming up.
