Our nearest neighbour has done this. He became unpopular with some locals after obtaining planning permission to split the detached cottage into two semis and spinning a yarn about not being a developer so I guess he didn't want them to know he was selling.......weird!Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

When nosey neighbours are told anything like that, everytime they see you thereafter there will be questions such as:
Much interest in it?
Anybody been round lately?
Have you found a buyer yet?
How much are you asking?
Have you reduced price?
How much have you sold it for?
Who have you sold to?
When are you moving?
Where to?
How much is it ?
There's no end to the questions.0 -
Just inform them you have sold to a developer who's designing a new mosque.
It'll soon draw everyone out....0 -

Your neighbour might have a friend or relative who will give you a good price for it.0

So what if it's their gossip of the week - you'll hopefully be gone soon!
As above, they will recognise the signs. Someone will be outside your house taking photos for a start.
I have alerts still set for where I live so know everything coming on the market. If any of my neighbours sells, I'd know. I talk about property prices and selling with one of them every time I see him lol. Maybe he thinks I'm a nosy ol' bag
Unless you have something you don't want them to know, I really can't think why you'd be worrying about them finding out.
It'll prob take a while to get a buyer, and the process will take about 3 months, so I don't think you'll keep it a secret anyway. You'd be better off being blatant than letting them search out gossip.
Your buyers may go knocking at doors in the street. Most on here do. I don't, but would maybe chat with someone who was outside of their house.

I've also still got "alerts" up for property in this area. I didnt see any point in cancelling them when I had selected/bought a property - as I want to keep an eye on the turnover of property generally round here and keep a good idea of what my own property is worth. Hence I know that a nearby property is up for sale - even though there is no board outside it and I wouldnt be able to see any "signs of activity" from my house.
The other point is that commonly-repeated advice for would-be buyers to come knocking on the neighbours' doors to "ask what the neighbourhood is like"/aka checking the neighbours themselves out. Some would-be buyers might actually do this - and ring the doorbell of OP's neighbour and then the cat is out of the bag anyway.0 -
the sooner you move the sooner you will get new nosey neighbours"enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0
