  • I have to say, AnotherJoe, that I was just WAITING to be asked to pay the deposit but incredibly that hasn't happened! Husband reckons they'll call the estate agent tomorrow and say they're willing to exchange if I pay the deposit though! :D

Oh you've been brave enough to visit the house you're buying. Good move! Keep them on board, hopefully with their sympathy

Unfortunately we had to - there's another tale to tell there which I won't bore you all with, but the short version is that the house has been rented out for several years and there were some issues the vendors didn't know about, which we insisted were put right before we would exchange. So the solicitor advised we went round to check everything was in hand before exchange and we did (and took the opportunity to measure up) but you're right, it took a lot of courage :(

OMG. I'm so sorry. With a dad like that I'm not surprised she's a bit mad. REALLY hope your vendors will wait - will the EA contact previously interested buyers to see if they'll pick this up and run it quickly?

    Oh, <phew>
That's actually REALLY good news, because it means that at least there's not a whole chain-full of people being mucked about, ready to murder this cretin... It means that you've got a far better chance of keeping your purchase intact.
  • Not posted on this thread before, but have been following with interest (and horror!)

Just wanted to say, like others, I am so sorry you are having such an awful experience selling your property and just astounded at the behaviour of the buyer and her father. What an intolerable character.

You did right to put the property on the market, and I hope that you get a fresh new buyer mega quickly as it would be so satisfying to see they didn't get your house after all their nonsense!

    Good luck with everything.

Yes, we're incredibly lucky there's not a longer chain as someone else would probably have pulled the plug by now. Our vendors are professional landlords it seems, with a portfolio of houses they rent out, and the tenant has been gone since mid July so the house is just standing empty waiting for us - waaaah! I have to say they've been great - so I'm hoping they might wait for us. We really want to live in that area and nothing has come on the market in the last three months.

Well hopefully the dad/daughter combo will still go ahead toute-suite, now they're getting a kick up the !!!.

With any luck this time next week you'll be kicking off your shoes, sipping champagne in your great new pad, well on the way to forgetting all this trauma.

The dad has somehow got it into his head that I'm loaded and told the estate agent he 'can't believe' I can't afford everything they're asking for when I'm buying a house in the area we're moving to. We're paying £160k for the house we're buying. Clearly I am a secret millionaire.

But even if you were loaded, it's still not a fair request, and why exactly do they think you would ever pay this?

Madness. I'm so sorry, I know you must be so angry/fed up right now. Hopefully the time will come when you can look back on this and laugh?

Well precisely - even if my vendors were millionaires I would still never dream of asking them to pay for my survey or buildings insurance! Because it would be MY responsibility.

I must say I remember being very stressed by the vendor of my current house when I moved in and found he'd left all his furniture behind but I can now laugh about it ... Ten years later ... ;)
