    A bit late but Win 7,8 and 10 have two options built in;
-a complete re-set to factory condition which will delete all your files and programmes but give you a pristine windows

-a re-set which will bring your windows up to new but keep all your files and programmes
There are techie names for these options which I can't remember

I've done both and they are very easy to do.

Thanks Slinga. Already tried this option THREE times - the Factory Image Restore option, deleting all files.

Unfortunately there is a problem with Windows 7 updates for people now they are geared towards Windows 10, and are stopping these in about 3 years I think.

Help, please NiftyDigits - I'm stuck already

Typical for it to come up with 3 partitions, not 2.

    They are, in order:
(the second set of numbers are the Free Space)

    Partition 1 70.0MB 61.0MB OEM (RESERVED)

    Partition 2 RECOVERY 10.7GB 4.5GB SYSTEM

    Partition 3 OS 585.4GB 541.7GB PRIMARY

Is it Partition 1 and 3 that I choose?

    Thanks

You can just do Partition 3

Many, many thanks NiftyDigits. Hopefully you won't hear another peep out of me today, and that I'll be too busy installing the hundreds of windows updates :D

Quick update, NiftyDigits. Fingers crossed it is now running okay. I got the image installed okay but still got the windows updates hanging problem.

I managed to fix it by manually installing two KB......... updates (will update here when I find the exact details, put them on a flashdrive).

I was then able to put all the important updates on (about 165).

Although the image had the SP1 Pack included I have noticed that this is in one of the important updates to install. Do I just ignore this, or would it not install twice anyway if I inadvertently include it with other updates in the future?

Incidentally, I went for the Professional option but there was no offer to upgrade to Windows 10 - not that I would want it yet anyway.

Once again, many thanks for all your help and your time. It was really appreciated.

The important update won't be SP1, but perhaps an update for Windows 7 SP1. Not the same thing....unless Microsoft have made a silly blunder. Include it anyway.

There are few links around detailing how to move to Windows 10 for free, if you want to do so.

    The updates are as follows:

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64 based Systems (KB976932)

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - August 2016(KB890830)

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.227.1079.0)

Not sure about the last one as it 'Cannot be removed once installed'.
I've got malwarebytes and bitdefender so probably don't need the malicious software removal tool, do I?

A much better way than waiting for a new W7 install to tediously plough through updates is using the convenience roll-up:

Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

Won't do any harm to select to install SP1 as it will detect that it is already there and not bother to install it.
Microsoft appear to have made a bit of a shambles of this.

Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System. (Short cut: Windows/Home key + Pause Break). It will show you there if SP1 is installed.
