I don't know how early in 2017 the new mk will be available. It may help with second hand prices, and it may encourage more current owners to trade in for a new one, giving you more on the market? Possibly?!

Bit more info here, but still no exact date:

We're in the middle of ordering a Superb and initially looked at both the Octavia and the Superb. The dealer said that the Superb had its facelift a year or so ago, and the Octavia will look more like the new Superb after its facelift. Went for the Superb partly because we didn't want to order a brand new car just before it gets a facelift (!), and we decided we definitely needed a car the size of a cruise ship that we could live in if need be. I did ask the dealer if the Superb has an optional extra of a man who lives in the boot and gets out to park it for you. :D

As for Octavia engines from what I can see the 1.2 and 1.4 seem better (faster and more economical) than the 1.6. Is that a fair comment?

If you're looking at the 2005-13 model, the 1.2 and 1.4 petrol engines were TSI, but the 1.6 petrol wasn't so, weirdly, yes - the 1.6 has less BHP, slower 0-60 and lower MPG than the 1.2 and 1.4:

The 1.6 also has shocking emissions (based on the £230/year VED!).

Look out though because there is also a 1.4 16V which is the slowest of the bunch - you don't want that! 78bhp in something the size of an Octavia?!

Slower = cheaper insurance though. That's the only benefit.

We're not looking for high performance but yes the 78bhp version definitely would need to be avoided! Thanks for the tip. Its slightly confusing with the engines on this one....1.2 or 1.4 TSI I think we want

    Hi all,

As the title says (£7,000) is my rough budget to replace my Skoda Fabia

Very happy with Skoda so am thinking of getting an Octavia Estate, but what others should I consider? I've also thought of Golf Estate, Volvo V50 estate. Would probably be looking at a petrol engine with emphasis on economy over performance, but not too slow.

    Any thoughts much appreciated!

Horses for courses and each to his or her own.

    But, since you ask...

If you’re prepared to do some research and perhaps travel beyond your locale to go and collect a particularly good one, for substantially less than the £7,000 suggested by the OP you can buy a superbly-specced, fully-sorted, late-model Jaguar X-Type Estate in immaculate condition with many years and many thousands of miles ahead of it to enjoy.

Petrol engined 2.5 or (preferably) 3.0 litre V6 with 4WD and all the toys.

Incredible bargain provided you do your homework and find a good one.

But not, of course, for everyone. (Fortunately :).)

They also said their emphasis was on economy rather than performance so a sub 30mpg car with 300-500 pound road tax is probably not quite what they're looking for.

Thanks, but unfortunately I'm just looking for a cheap to run practical family car not the nicest possible car for the money! I'm well aware a Skoda Octavia is not the most exciting or desirable thing I could buy!

You could do a lit worse than the Skoda.
