As an accountant i would have thought that you would be more au fait with how things can go wrong when disputing a bill with a supplier. Your post doesnt make sense, you say they forgot to set the DD up THEN referred you to the Debt Collection agents ? Now you say they did that before the DD ?
Also, just because someones mate says info can be removed from a credit file within an hour doesn't make it true. I say this as someone who deals with removing info from credit files. And please take note of Anselld's post regarding gambling transactions, they will have a huge impact on your mortgage applications.
We are now not using my information to make the mortgage application and are going off my Husbands alone, you can do this whilst also having me on the actual mortgage so my bank account is irrelevant anyway. But I do use a separate bank account for matched betting transactions if you are interested... Thank you for all of your random advise on irrelevant issues but honestly I am in no financial difficulties; if I ever find myself struggling to get by I will know just who not to turn to for friendly helpful support.....0 -
I'm not giving you financial advice I'm giving you my opinion about your financial situation based on the information you have provided.
You keep contradicting yourself. You said you couldn't pay the £200 in one go because it would take money away from matched betting and promoting your books.
Well if you have a deposit then you could have used that money to pay for the £200 bill and it wouldn't have affected your cashflow.
So why didn't you use some of your deposit money to pay for the bill?.
The root cause of the problem is that you paid a bill in installments that should have been paid in full using either your funds from matched betting or your deposit.
You don't seem to realise the mistake you have made so if we don't tell you then how will you know not to make it again in the future.

... you post about how to claim benefits so I think you need to sit down
Exactly!. 6 years ago when I was 19 I was posting about claiming benefits and in an average paying job with minimal savings. Now due to my determination I have professional qualifications and a good paying career and due to advice on this forum I have all my savings and investments in high paying accounts. I have also paid far more in tax since then than I claimed in benefits!.
If you just dismiss others advice and think you are always right you will never get anywhere in life.
So how much interest are you getting on your savings which you have to give 45 days notice to withdraw from?. Considering that I have multiple accounts paying 5% interest that gives me instant access to my money.0 -

I haven't asked for financial advice. I have a very good qualified financial advisor provided by my publisher. I haven't asked for mortgage advice I have a highly qualified mortgage advisor. I haven't asked for career advice; it is not necessary I am a fully qualified employed accountant with 2 successful published books and one on the way. I congratulate you on your success and do not begrudge you the tax credits you had when you were on a low income, I just found it rather hypocritical if you were unable to get by yourself.
You have seen that I spread this £200 over 3 months and assumed that I am in financial difficulties, I have had to go into great detail about my circumstances to convince you that this is not the case and your advice is not called for, but you are insisting that I am struggling. I am not struggling I don't need this kind of advice I don't know why you are insisting I do.:mad:0 -

I have already gotten 'somewhere in life' I am extremely proud of my achievements; and yes I have taken others advice. I am all ears when it comes to good advice but this is just random irrelevant advice that I didn't ask for and do not need. Again if you have any good advice on the issues in question... I will be completely open to it. Although I have now spoken to citizens advice and know British Gas did act illegally when they mis-informed me. I have taken their advice fully on board and have not dismissed it at all because it was good, relevant advice. A couple of people have posted that they think it might be possible to have the marks on my file removed; again I am anything but dismissive on that because it is relevant to the issue and it is the kind of advice I need. I am sure your intentions are good and you probably think you are trying to help but you don't need to I am fine.0 -
Thank you for bringing the discussion back to the actual issue. They failed to set the DD up and rather than letting me know about it they just referred it to a debt collection agency even though the date of the 1st DD had not yet passed. So I set the DD up with them again as well as making the 1st payment by debit card.
It's still your responsibility to check that payments are being made. Before a debt collection agent is involved, you would have received letters advising you that no payment had been received ?0 -

I'm not insisting you do anything I'm just giving you my opinion based on whay you have posted. I also don't think you are struggling I just think you can re-distribute your money to get a better return and have some which you can access immediately for situations like your £200 bill.
I have asked some questions and you have not answered them which is fair enough. You say you have a very good fiancial advisor. But just consider how much interest you are getting on an account which you have to give 45 days notice to withdraw from.
Then consider that you can get multiple accounts that pay 5% interest on balances and give instant access to the money.
I can't imagine you are getting much more than 2% on your account so why would you not put at least some of your money into 5% accounts?.
Also if you don't have a credit card then get one because this would have enabled you to pay for the bill and then pay it off interest free at the next statement date which would have meant you could have used the money from your next payday if needed.0 -
It's not illegal to give incorrect information. You need to go back to British Gas and escalate your complaint.0

The debt agency were involved BEFORE any payments were due. British Gas have already admitted that this was an error on their part and apologised for it. It is actually not the referral to the debt agency that caused the mark on my credit report, it did initially but they had it removed. It is the fact that I chose to pay in instalments that caused the mark, however, I was careful to check before taking this option that my credit file would not be effected and they confidently assured me it would not. That is the issue0
