Just a question about removing the EU stars once we leave the EU. Will displaying the stars be an offence when travelling in the EU when not a member ?

Very unlikely. But nobody will know until the outcome is known from negotiations which haven't even started yet and will take at least two years.

Just bought a pair of GB number plate stickers of eBay to replace the EU stars, just over £1.50.
You've spent money to make legal number plates illegal? Why? To make some political point?

Quite right regarding the neat little GB plate. Turns out that the letters are only 52 mm high but need to be 80 mm according to the AA.
That's dreadfully annoying, I've been driving around with mine, of roughly the same dimensions, for years, in several EU countries. And it's bigger than the 'GB' built into current number plates.

Looks like I'll have to change it, but I see that there are magnetic ones with the 'correct' dimensions available for only a couple of quid, I'll probably have to get one. More fridge door acreage gone!

What I really want is one of those vintage black and chrome G B things the size of a dinner plate. I've never had a car it would look right on, but you never know.

Another thing to remember about the mandatory hi-viz jackets is the one French rule that makes perfect sense. There must be one jacket for each passenger, and they must be accessible from inside the car, not tucked away in the boot.

I had a chrome one on mine. It trapped the dirt though so I switched to the magnetic type that lives on the fridge door between trips.

What I would really love are the two registration numbers "GB 1" and "1 GB", each mounted on classic square plates on the rear of our cars. :grinheart

    Get yer wallet out.

    GB1 is currently on a R-R Phantom.
1GB is currently on a Bentley Arnage.

Why on earth don't we change our numberplates so that they all have a GB indicator as standard? All other countries in Europe seem to do this whether in or outside the EU. It seems ridiculous that we still have to use stickers.

I get that some people would have objected to the EU style ones being standard, but now we could surely just have GB and a union jack ?

We don't have to. We can change the plates if we want, or we can use the stickers if we prefer.

Don't forget that cars in many other EU countries change registrations - and thereby plates - when a car changes owners outside local areas, or have done until very recently - and, in many cases, plates are officially issued rather than just bought in the local car spares shop. The UK's historically been very unusual in having registrations that stay with the car for life, no matter where in the country it's actually registered to.

The EU plate border is an EU-wide standard. It's an alternative to the global-standard national identifier, and is only valid for cars registered in an EU member country and being used within other EU members.
