Now TV - help please! It's so confusing!

Options
Hi all,
I'm hoping that you lovely people will be able to help me out.
I want to get rid of Sky. It's expensive and I'm sure I can get a better deal elsewhere.
The only reason we have kept it this long is Game of Thrones on Sky Atlantic.
I have heard that you can watch Game of Thrones via Now TV.

Is this true?

Also, are you able to record programmes with Now TV?

Is it true I need super duper Internet to make it work properly?

Please help, it's so confusing.

Thanks in advance.

You dont need mega internet. What do you have now?
You can check the Now TV site to see what channels are covered.

I believe the new smart box only offers pause/rewind,no recording

    Thanks custardy.
    We get our broadband from
    Sky.

I read somewhere that I can buy a box that's recordable which will have Now Tv as an app available on it.
    Does that sound right?

Yes you can buy a Youview box which will have a limited Now TV app but you can't record Now TV on it.

Not that I know of. Remember Now TV is a Sky service.
So they wont want too much crossover.
  • I'm so glad this has been posted. I've just sat down to start a spreadsheet to compare the costs of now tv, amazon prime, amazon fire, virgin - etc etc etc etc across all the permutations.

I've 'done' Now TV but after all of that hadn't cottoned on that you can't record stuff - since many programmes I watch are on at the same time that's not going to work as I can't watch them all at once!

I too want to kill off the horrendous £80 month Sky fees - I cannot afford it any more.

But I also cannot for the life of me, work out which one to pick - it's seems almost impossible to figure out what's what and will literally probably take me a full day and many phone calls to see who includes what and so on, why does it have to be so complicated.

I would go with Now as I can halve my monthly costs, but if I can't record, that gets me no further forward.

Why is there not a genuine comparison site that shows you which channels, what the provided box offers, etc etc. Trying to unpick this from every possible individual site is nigh on impossible.

Frustrated.com and feeling like I just can't get away from Sky.
  • While you can't record on NOW TV, many programmes (including GoT) are available on catch up so you don't need to record them. Watch one of the clashing programmes live then watch the rest later on catch up. I don't think I watched any of the last series of GoT as it was broadcast.
  • You can not get sky atlantic on virgin so that rules them out for many. Personally I would use Nowtv and a freesat/free view recorder. That way you can dip in and out of the paytv side of it.

What are you getting for £80?

This is the breakdown of my bill with Sky:

Sky Go Extra - including discounts FREE
    Sky Multiscreen £12.00
    Box Sets £38.00
    Sky Broadband Unlimited £7.50
    Sky Talk Line Rental £17.40
    1571 - Voicemail £1.25
Sky Talk Evenings and Weekends Extra £4.00
    Free items
    Total £80.15

I guess with all the other alternatives it would also be necessary to not only find out how I would replicate the two HD boxes that I currently have (or figure out if that's even needed with some of the alternatives) and of course add that on to their prices as well (?).

I'm presuming with the suggestion that was made to also have a recordable freeview box that that would only record freeview channels not any of the others..?

Anyway, if your lovely folks guidance can get me through to a place where I've got the channels I need and am not paying £80 a month that'll be great.

I started looking at Prime/Fire stick thingy last night but I literally lost the will to live.

Oh, and I should say, films aren't really something I'm that bothered about - if you want to watch a film it's easy enough through Play or any variety of sources. It's the watching of box sets and tv programmes that is what I need. At the moment I watch:

    CH4/E4 (MIC, Containment, First Dates)
TLC - Yes to the Dress, I Am Jazz
    W - Outnumbered, Bondi Rescue
    Sky 1 - Don’t Tell the Bride
Sky Atlantic - Ray Donovan, Ballers
Sky Living - Shades of Blue
    Alibi - Rosewood
    Universal - Mr Robot

And I guess I'm trying to get as much of that included in my new package as I can so I don't have to buy series elsewhere at a price.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I'm trying to find a cheap TV provider too and want to keep my cheap broadband deal from SKY. So is it right I'd have to buy a Now TV and then I'd be able to watch their programmes using my internet and have no subscription fee?
