You need a cable to go from your modem to your ADSL filter. The cable plugs into the phone socket on the filter. Chippy's link shows a suitable cable "Belkin RJ11 Male to UK BT Male Cable 2m"

If you have a cable that fits the socket on your dial-up modem and fits into the ADSL phone socket, that is all that is required.

  • The ebuyer Belkin 16478 item is a cable - the picture just shows the plugs at each end. The squarish plug is an RJ11 and this plugs into the RJ11 socket on your computer, NOT the Speedtouch ADSL modem. The wider plug at the other end is a BT phone plug, which you should plug into the phone socket on the ADSL microfilter.

With the phone socket on the ADSL filter already being used by your phone, you'll have to get a BT socket doubler like this one on ebay, which allows both your phone and internal modem cable to be plugged into the filter at the same time.

I nearly said that but surely you can get it working first by simply disconnecting your phone while testing out your fax software.

    Yes, indeed.

, unplug your phone from the ADSL filter, plug in the Belkin RJ11 Male to UK BT Male Cable from the internal modem instead and try sending a test fax.

Hello espresso - you and Chippy are being so forebearing and kind.
I have done this a number of times without success. If you don't mind, I'll pm you with the text sent earlier to Chippy.
For what it's worth, I just had a grey/black/red msg saying shutdown had to be done: NFT or NTF notification? Never seen it before. Anyway, that was taking over half an hour, so then did a modem/screen closedown myself and reopened normally.
At the moment, the Belkin lead is in 2nd space of new double BT wall socket, but if I plug it in, I lose the phone and Bb, although I sometimes hear radio interference type noise. Radio reception is affected now - R4 longwave. The removal and connection of various leads to do with all of this, consistently affects all radio reception. Is this normal?

The fax modem in your PC is simply another telephony device and therefore it need to be connected to an ADSL filter, as per the above diagram. This is why we suggested simply removing your telephone temporarily and plugging the fax modem cable into the then empty phone socket.

But now that I have the double socket inserted, shouldn't the phone and other bits now ALL work when plugged in as shown in your excellent plan above?
A thought occurs to me - is Belkin a generic or Brand name - I bought another looking like thst in your plan i.e.RJll at one and oblong plug at other. Does it matter that it wasn't Belkin?
    Thankyou again.
I know full well that if I plug the RJ11 end into modem now, I'll lose the phone and this post.

Providing that the doubler is plugged into the ADSL filter. e.g. all devices plugged in after the filter.

Belkin is a brand name and it was just an example that Chippy found to illustrate what cable you needed. Some modem leads have four wires and others just have the centre two wired as usually these are the only ones used.

    Thankyou again.

Providing you are actually plugging this modem lead into the correct socket (your modem), you should not lose your phone or broadband connection. In fact you can connect via a dial-up modem at the same time as broadband, just like you can make a phone call at the same time.
