What an amazingly naive [STRIKE]stupid[/STRIKE] attitude.

And you're surprised after 15 pages where I don't recall seeing anyone agree with the OP's view of life

If he found himself in that position he would have to make sure that the state housed and fed him and we would all have to pick up the tab as we do for so many people in that situation.

Haha, you really think the state would house a single person with no dependants?

Agreed. He's probably used to histrionics from dad, but it's unlikely that he will have been put out by them before (beyond eye rolling).

Please quote a case where a family home has been repossessed as a result of a student on joint tenancy being found liable for so much money that the guarantor parent ended up leaving their home.

Your attitude is worrying, as it means you will deny your offspring (and I assume yourself) the opportunities in life because of the theoretical risk that you perceive when the vast majority of people take a more measured view.

He's still under the impression that he would be somehow providing buildings insurance, and could be held liable for things that are not down to the actions of his son or the co-tenants.

Thinking about it, I believe the problem might be that he doesn't realise that in "unlimited liability" the liability refers to the amount; it doesn't mean they can hold you liable for anything that happens due to third parties or outside agencies. He certainly seems to believe, for example, that if the house burned down due to an electrical fault he would have to pay for it. Which is clearly nonsense.

Perhaps "aquitaine" is the son of the dad from "last minute request from buyers". There are definitely some similarities.

I checked that before paying. The money is with the estate agent and if the landlord goes bust I'll only lose a month and get the rest back.

And if the estate agent goes bust and his landlord throws him out? Are estate agents allowed to do that, shouldn't it go into something like one of the deposit schemes? Sounds dodgy to me. I would never pay in advance like that.

Landlord would fail to evict in such circumstances

If the landlord wasn't getting his rent? I think he would expect his rent to be paid to him or he would evict. If the tenant has entered into some agreement with the letting agent surely that is at his own risk and if the agreement was with the landlord he would want the money.
