Dealer mistake on oil change, would like an opinion

The dealership was Renault, the car was a Grand Scenic. They cleaned the engine, filled with oil and installed a new oil cap. There was no charge and whilst not admitting they made the mistake said that it was likely the problem was caused by the mechanic doing the service. I'm happy with that and will sort out the drive myself.
When I got the car home the wife said it sounded like a normal car now and not like a London taxi .
Do you have your radio up louder than her by any chance?0 -

Great service from the dealership, I really didn't think they would do anything or that you would have any claim against them. Great to see them offering some goodwill like this.
Hopefully you'll take a peek under the bonnet a little more regularly now, as this could have ended up a lot worse!0 -
I'm very happy with the opinions aired, (keyboard warriors not applicable). It's exactly the reason I posted it and was honest about the situation from the beginning. The fact that most think I don't have a case is fair enough, I'm listening.
Regarding the engine noise change, when my wife mentioned it I had a good listen but really didn't hear anything distinctive that would make me look at the engine. At the time the car was parked on grass and not a road surface so that, I assumed wrongly, was the difference she was hearing.
Anyway, I'm off to the garage now, will update later.
Hopefully a quick clean up, new filler cap and a top off of oil will see your right.
I would encourage you to start checking fluid at least once a month.
Only takes 5 mins in the morning.0 -

Good cheap bit of feather-deruffling by the dealer.0 -
If this is a renault DCI diesel keep an eye on it. It is not unheard of for them the wear the bores resulting in excess pressure in the sump. This manifests as the oil breather lines blowing off and dumping oil all over the engine bay. Could the cap have been loose and then blown off by excess crankcase pressure.0

Which Renault DCi are you talking about? 1.9, 2.0 or 1.5? I suspect the new 1.6 is too new for any significant issues.0 -
When I passed my test I used to check the oil regularly, but my car still ground to a shuddering halt one day.
My Dad was beginning to get revved up to have a go at me when the mechanic who came to tow it checked the oil out of curiosity and discovered that according to the dipstick the oil was fine. Turns out there had been an emulsion build up just beyond the dipstick creating a pool of oil that made it appear fine.
So to all those saying check the dipstick, it doesn't always work."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Just because it is hard to believe doesn't mean it didn't happen, just because something is unusual doesn't mean that it is impossible.
Dipstick showed plenty of oil, engine less so.
I definitely believe I spent £600 on a new engine though.0 -

Interesting point. As suggested by others, I may actually lift the bonnet weekly now to check things are OK so will soon see any additional oil discharge.
Yes the Renault dealership was good in how they dealt with the issue. The timing belt is due very soon so their goodwill in this case will see them get the job over my local, (and very good), garage.Pants0
