Bike magazine got one of the new Triumph triples to test a few years ago. They ran it for a few weeks and it seized, wrecking the engine. When asked by Triumph when they last checked the oil, they replied that with a new, modern bike they didn't think it was necessary. The triples use a lot of oil when ridden hard, and they had run it dry. My Sprint used 1.5 litres in 1000 miles when I did some fast Continental riding a couple of years ago. If I hadn't checked it regularly, I would have ruined it.

If I am doing a lot of motorway miles, I check the oil level every day. It gives me peace of mind if nothing else.

  • The past couple of cars I've owned didn't even have a dipstick and the oil could only be checked from the inside using the computer.

Generally I only opened the bonnet to top up the washer fluid and at the same time I'd quickly check the other levels. The washer tank was large though so I could easily go more than 6 months between topping up.

That's a brilliant oil level sensor then, you know it's low on oil because bottom end is knocking before the sensor knows the level is low.

What makes / models were they? Genuinely curious as I want to put them in "ones to avoid" category, as it sounds a really crap idea.

Even the Toyota has a dipstick - and it's the model with the new 1.2 engine, designed in a country that loves it gadgetry ! It's actually surprisingly clear of silly plastic covers etc : http://toyotabountifulreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/22/2015/04/auris.jpg

I have never checked the oil in the chav wagon.

The computer has a readout showing level and time to change.

2.5 years old and I don't even know where the oil filler cap is!

    I'm just not that bothered.

Now with TPMS, will some people never check tyre pressures till the light comes on?
  • As for no drop stick, from my experience, yes no visible dip stick however, unscrew the oil filler cap and all will be revealed.

Sorry, but that is not the dealer's problem. If the cap had been left loose, or off, then it would have been everywhere the day after the service.[/B][/I][/U]

So how did the oil cap work itself loose?

Well it took a while before the first keyboard warrior came along. Do you get bullied a lot in real life?

Jaguar 3.0tdv6 has no dipstick. There is a pipe which looks like a dipstick tube, but is actually for syphoning the oil out.

I think the same goes for many Mercedes and BMWs.

To be honest I prefer a dipstick.

Renaults have an electronic oil level check and a dipstick

I suspect it is cost related, saving £5 per car make difference when you make 100000 cars a year
