My DD is Renting in London £1100 for 2 bed flat in South London. Bills won't normally be included

Its all very doable - but it does stagger belief what some people are offering.  I hate to say if he didn't get some of the limited places at the Uni hall of residence (some in London have them, but not all) he will have to find some people to share with and that's nearly as scary as the landlords.  I think a single flat would be more manageable but not as enjoyable.  There are usually plenty of FB groups for the Uni - or plenty of households looking for extra members - or local groups where he could find someone from le shire also going up to London.  We organised a full weekend when looking zooming round Brighton with 3 flatmates to be - I hate the saying but failing to plan for this is planning to end up in grottsville.

@f0xh0les you will need to be prepared to be signatory to all sorts of guarantees and so forth (which is scary) unless you pay lots of rent up front to get out of it - in a large house if you sign the guarantee you are signing up to in theory but not in practice liability for the whole house for the whole year + damages.  My DD was lead tenant and it took a lot of her time so would advice against that - sometimes you just have to pay your money and keep your mouth shut. Also would advise not moving if you can help 3 lots of tenancy negotiations and deposit arguments is a nightmare - even one was bad enough

I reckon I funded DD to the tune of £500pm on top of her maintenance loan, and that was with her working 20 hours a week (which also distracted from uni), if possible I would recommend that your DS works hard in the holidays (at home or in London) rather than in term time.

good luck!. plus tell your OH to get over it  - retakes are not an attractive option so why not do the foundation!!

A 'spensive bit. :cold_sweat: luckily we should only have to top him up about £200 a month,  which is pretty much how much he costs us in hummus.
The closest YHA is London Thameside  so I will still be able to bring the gang when we visit.

    Congratulations.

Don't forget how easy it is walk/commute in London.  Close to Uni is best for social reasons, but 15 minutes on a bus can save £100 a month.  Anyway the SU will have good advise and possibly even try and organise shares, some don't bother but I imagine London uni's will be good at that

    How exciting!

Whoop! Well done to DS1! He has achieved and got a place at uni - not to be sniffed at!!

My sis went to QMU and had a fab time :) And topping up £200/ mth is a good result - and an amazing one in London! -( we paid DS1's rent @ £95ish/ week + occasional extras for his last 2 years in SW  Wales and his loan went on living costs. )

If he hasn't got a job/ volunteering experience this Summer, any chance you could take him along to foodbank? - will be good experience for him and something to put down on any job apps he does - even 4 weeks there will be worthwhile (in all senses!) x
