Your boys must be so frustrated. I hope the school/s manage to find things to keep those pupils who are up to date engaged instead of them getting bored and disengaging.

We had a long school day - 8.30 - 5.30 BUT we had a lot of sport, so there was a break from the class room after lunch most days (games or other non-academic activities depending on the day of the week). We also had school on Saturday - lessons in the morning, then activities (mine was choir practice) then usually sports matches in the afternoon.
  • If they increase school hours then the pay off should be no homework. It's unfair to tell kids to do another 2 hours a day and then pile the homework when they have less time at home.

Completely agree about then being tired. I do a standard 9 - 5 and I can guarantee that my best work isn't done after I've been staring at the screen for 6 hours. If it doesn't work for adults then it won't work for kids either.

I guess it depends whether the school time means less homework. If it were time spent doing supervised 'homework' in the form of lessons that would be different vs extra school hours plus homework on top.

It's also different between those kids who do need the extra school time to catch up because they are significantly behind from home schooling vs those who are reasonably on track or some where they've even benefitted being out of the classroom environment. But how do you ensure those that need the extra support get it without them being singled out as the 'thick kids' - which is what their peers will brand them as, and they'll end up resenting the additional time which is also not productive.
