Curtains and Blinds - where and how much?!

Hi lovely people!

Completing on our first home this month (fingers crossed!!). We've never had to buy curtains or blinds before so don't know where is good to buy from and how much middle of the range curtains or blinds should even cost!

We have some pretty wide windows in the house (can't remember the exacts) so unsure whether generic ones will suffice!

Where has everyone previously gone to buy these?

Currently thinking;
ikea - great price for low/medium quality curtains
Dunelm - find a sale and search for good quality curtains at knock down price
Online - seem to be a bit pricy?
Blinds I think we may need to buy online made to measure but are there any places generally great for these?

Won't comment on curtains as bought mine from different places and usually when they were on sale :) but we bought some blinds from this place and were pleased with speed of delivery, customer service and price. This was definitely cheaper than buying them in-store or from the likes of Hillarys. They also sell curtains.

Secondhand can mean huge savings as people who are dictated to by fashion spend loadsamoney keeping up to the minute.

I have frequently bought on a well-know auction site and never had a wrong 'un yet.

Charity shops can also turn up with some real bargains especially when money is tight and/or people don't know how to repair broken strings in the heading tape. (PM me if you need to know how.)

Remember too that most curtains look best if you have at least double the width of the window ... a 40 inch window should have two curtains which laid side by side touching together measure 80 inches.

Many people don't use curtains in a kitchen as they can get easily splashed or spattered and require frequent washing. I use a roller blind in mine and wipe it over with a damp cloth as I give the draining board and sink its weekly good-going-over.

Hope that helps and congratulations and happiness in your new home.

Great tips there - thank you! Never thought of second hand but will have a look!

When curtains are advertised as "Size 168cm (66 inches) wide by 183cm (72 inches) drop"...does that mean that each curtain in the pair is 66in wide and as such fits a window 66in wide?

Yeah for now the curtains will be living room and bedrooms with blinds for the others :)

Thank you! We are excited to move in :D

Ready made should fit most if you are not too picky on the length.
I used terryfarbic by once couple years ago, they are ok.

For the kitchen, I use a lace curtain which I can frequently wash...

And make sure curtain/ blind in the bedroom are blackout curtain/ blind.

Personally would go for curtain instead of blind as it is a better thermal insulation in winter.

I have used this company several times for wider curtains, the service and quality is very good. Although the choice is a little limited.

We recently bought new curtains for our new home and used https://www.curtainscurtainscurtains.co.uk, they were amazing to be honest. The range they have is huge and they even have stuff specifically for kid’s bedrooms that's really tasteful we were able to let the kids have a choice from some we filtered. There's also loads of info guides and videos on how to put curtains up and things like that which was really useful as I'd never done it before!
