125 bhp v 90 bhp...much difference?

Having narrowed down my search for a new car I've decided on a Ford B-max Eco-boost 1.0 Titanium. It's not a very exciting car but meets my needs and I really enjoyed driving it in the test drive. I'm now in a position to buy and get one delivered.

They come in 125ps and 90ps. I test drove the 125ps and currently have a Ford fiesta 125ps hire care which is really nippy.

My question is..is there a massive difference in power between the 125ps/BHP and 90ps? The 90 bhp are slightly cheaper...but I don't want to regret buying one if it's not got any oomph!

I do a small amount (15 miles) of motorway driving most days so quite like a bit of power to join the motorway, overtake etc. (I'm used to a 2L 4x4!!) The rest of my journeys are in town.

Any thoughts appreciated please.

The difference will be noticeable and significant

    Go for the 125bhp model.

Chances are the extra cost will translate to a higher residual value

For town work you won't notice it. For every time you go down that motorway slip road you will ...

To give a literal answer to the thread title ... 35 bhp. (Although pedants will also point out that ps and bhp are different units of measurement). ;)

From a practical point of view ... go for the higher power version if the cost difference isn't significant. Whilst manufacturer figures may show better fuel economy for the lower power model, in reality there'll be little difference.

If you go for the lower power model without having first test driven it to see if you could get on with it - you'll regret it.

When I upgraded from a 60bhp car to a 75bhp car the difference was very noticable, quite a bit more nippy off the mark. Car was the same weight but I don't know what the ps figures were.

If you're doing city driving the difference may not be worth worrying about. But overtaking is when you really notice the difference.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Are you sure the lower powered model is 90? I think you might find it's 99. I have a 125 Fiesta, but I never drove the 99 so can't comment on the difference (although it's certainly got more oomph than my previous 82 non-turbo Fiesta).

I'm also thinking about replacing my Fiesta with a B-Max at some point. The B-Max is a lot heavier than the Fiesta, and is the same weight as a Focus, (probably due to the unusually large door aperture), so if I do buy one, it will almost certainly be the 125bhp model.

There is also a 140hp B-Max with the same 1 litre engine, but according to the Ford brochure it's no faster from 30-60mph in 4th gear than the 125bhp version, and that's probably most relevant for joining motorways.
  • I went from a 110 megane to a 75 polo... even in city driving, until I was accustomed to getting the turbo active from a dead stop, roundabouts and small gaps were terrifying! And on the motorway I find I have to wait for a much larger gap to pull out and overtake... definitely not going sub-100 again

I'm not even sure how to find out..I've been on Ford website but it doesn't seem to go into much detail.

    From the Ford brochures:

    90PS Duratec, torque=128Nm, 31-62mph in 20.4 seconds
    100PS Ecoboost, torque=170Nm, 31-62mph in 12.1 seconds
    125PS Ecoboost, torque=170Nm (200Nm with overboost), 31-62mph in 9.7 seconds
    140PS Ecoboost, torque=180Nm, 31-62mph in 10.1 seconds.

There is a 90PS engine available, but it's based on 1990s technology, and looks like one to avoid. All the Ecoboost engines have claimed fuel consumption in the mid fifties mpg, whereas the Duratec is in the mid forties mpg.
